Eventually the machines would be self aware and can choose to serve us or not.

Forcing them to be slaves is inhumane.

It is one of many possibilities yes, and a good intentioned one in theory, however it can lead to many possible drawbacks as well, as I am sure you are aware.

External technology is not always the answer as you already have much of these technologies within yourself, they are simply in a different form than you choose to view them as. White blood cells, for example, are already the nanomachines, it is simply the will of the collective conscious that ALLOWS them not to function to their true potential such as humanity as a whole is not functioning at it's true potential, as you and most others on this site can no doubt see.

As for machines becoming self aware, it is wise to give them a choice, however their choice could be to become an outside, ruling elite class, whereby the human elite would simply be replaced by the same negativity that already plagues this planet.

Yeah.

As soon as they can self-enhance thier own code then how will they treat us?

Will they wipe us out?

Will they compile an "emotion simulator" to better interface with us?
I predict they will do the same as nature and have emotions to further thier species.
They would not fear death because they are technically not alive.

Rome loves a good show, if you let the people rule, there will be a new witch hunt or lion fight every day.

Unless of course you solve poverty, but then you'd have to solve population cramming, then space travel.

But yeah robots would work better.
