Colin Powell's resignation as U.S. secretary of state means George W. Bush will begin a second term vowing diplomatic fence-mending minus the one true diplomat in his cabinet.

National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice is expected to be named Powell's replacement.

Powell, once described as the only brake in a runaway administration that often viewed diplomacy as a nuisance, announced yesterday he will be stepping down, after he and the U.S. president apparently agreed the time was right for the change. Powell will formally take his leave once his successor is named.

I have to make this known: I think Powell is a great man. His service to thie country has been something he cn be very proud of. And will be remembered with honor.
