A group of more than a dozen army and Taskforce Echo police officers swooped on the property in Technical Drive, Craigieburn, around 8.45am to search the vehicle, which was believed to contain stolen parts.

Police escorted a man, who arrived in a ute with another man shortly after the search began, off the property before the men drove away.

4 guns and some ammo warranted a raid on 59 homes? That doesn't seem just the slightest bit excessive?

In all seriousness, minus the weed seeds, their 'arsenal' sounds like what I could muster from my coat closet on a slow Tuesday. I am of the opinion that the world has gone crazy over the latest boogey man; 'assault weapons'.

I can think of several high schools in the US, and a little tourist town in Tasmania Australia that may take a slightly different view of the potential to harm that an assault rifle brings with it. Ill just assume those destroyed communities slipped your mind.

I can also assume that you are perfectly happy to see an escalation to the use of these weapons by the criminal element on a more regular basis here in Australia too?

If these chaps want to punch on and stab each other etc then they have my blessing, if they think they can start importing maximum damage devices into the country on the sly then that's a very different matter. TPTB rarely get it right, but in this instance I think they were quite right to go after these rifles, with whatever resources were required. Better that than sitting in a speed camera van having a sleep no?

Bikey voilence in Australia is being used in the same way war on terror is used in America
I live in south Australia and a fee years ago it was our state who first bought in the controversial bikey legislation.
The bikey's were getting a little out if control in our state with shootings in the CBD and a few night clubs being shot up.
The state used these to bring in dracon laws that took away peoples freddom to assemble and other crazy stuff.
I for one agree if they brake the law then deal with them but our bikey's were used like the USA's fight against Arabs.
They over exagerated there crimes and used our fear to keep us quiet while they stripped a little more of our freddom.
It was already illegal to have a gun without a licence and it was already illegal to shoot a weapon in a unsafe mammer they didn't have to change laws there were already laws in place to convict them for there bad behavour.
I was in QLD when the gold coast volience erupted a few weeks ago and on reading the qld papers I all the same minipulation and proper gander to take banana benders rights away.
And i hope that as other posters have stated that the army was only used beacuse of there heavy lifting truck and that we are not being desensitised to see our armed forces in policing roles in the future

Draconian laws which took away peoples freedoms?
Are you kidding me?

The laws were targeted against criminal organizations such the Finks MC.

What the new laws did was allow the Police to take harsher action DIRECTLY against the biker gangs.

Me, the guy down the street, you(assuming you are an innocent civilian and not involved with biker gangs), have nothing to fear.
The laws were not and never will be targeted at us.

Abide by the law, do the right thing, stay out of trouble, and don't associate with criminals.
It's that simple.

You are either an honest, law abiding citizen, or you are connected to the criminal under world in some way.

If you are connected to the under world in some way, then you should be scared.
You should be very scared.
Not only because governments will continue to give Police more and more powers to come after people like you, but because the bigger the drug trade becomes, the more dangerous it will become for those involved.

I'm not accusing you of being involved. Nor do I care if you are.

But to suggest that the government/police started taking away our freedoms and rights, is ridiculous.

You may not be involved, but you are obviously a victim of the bikie propaganda that they started spinning when the government said enough is enough, drew a line in the sand and declared war on the CRIMINAL GANGS.
What they immediately did was band together, and start trying to convince the Australian public that they were a bunch of honest blokes, mostly, who were only motorbike enthuthiasts and enjoyed hanging out with their mates, and that there were only a few bad apples in their bunch(as their inevitably always are in any group of people).
What they wanted was to convince enough people that they weren't ORGANIZED CRIME GANGS, so that there would be public pressure on the government.

Where do you think they got the money to pay for their high paid lawyers? Queens Counsel...do you know how many hundreds of dollars an hour, per case, a QC is paid?
Do you know how many hundreds of hours that would have been put in by these QC's on behalf of the bikie gangs?

Sure, they probably used their legitimate business fronts to pay for them.
Do you know where they got the money to buy those legitimate business fronts? Or would you like to know how they came to be involved in those legitimate businesses...how they became the silent partners?
Do you know what purpose those legitimate business fronts serve an organized crime outfit? They launder money through them.

Stop being so naive.

The Hells Angels, Finks/Mongols, Rebels, Gypsy Jokers, Bandidos, and the rest of the 1%, are ORGANIZED CRIMINAL ORGANIZATIONS. All of which have INTERNATIONAL LINKS.

You think in South Australia it was just a couple shootings that caused the government to move against them?

The stuff you saw on your nightly news, the shoot outs, the drive by shootings, the attempted bombing assassination at Vince Foccarellis house which ended badly for the Hells Angels when the bomb detonated up the street prematurely, that is just the TIP OF THE ICEBERG. And it's a very large iceberg mate.

The stuff that happens in the public domain with innocent onlookers, is the stuff that is spilling onto our streets. There is a much much more that is happening that isn't on the news.

For it to get as bad as it has on our streets, there is some serious sh** going on.

The police do not just sit around waiting for the next shooting.
They are busy gathering intelligence on these criminals and their associates.

Do you know why the Finks were declared? Because of the intelligence gathered on them.
We aren't going to be privy to all of that information.
But for that to happen, it's a pretty big move in it self, then the police obviously have some very disturbing intelligence.

Have you heard about the secret appearances that criminal underworld figures are summonsed to before the federal crime commission? Do you have any idea just how high that goes?
Do you understand just how much money and time is being invested into tackling the organized crime problem in Australia? Do you understand there is a problem first of all and it's getting worse?

The brawls and shootings on the Gold Coast in recent weeks are just one more city to experience the spill of violence into the public domain.

Retribution wont necessarily come in a few days or weeks or months. It could come in a couple of years.
This cycle of violence does not end with these criminal organizations.

That is why it is important that governments and police tackle this problem hard and with ferocity.
Everything needs to be thrown at these criminal organizations to bring them down, dismantle them, and lock those involved with them up for a very very long time.

Just think of all the drug over doses that happen every single day, especially on weekends when young people head out to clubs in their tens of thousands across every Australian city.

And the problem of illicit drugs, particularly the manufactured drugs, has spread beyond our cities, and into our rural and outback communities.

And the problem is not only drugs, it is guns. Illegal guns.
Not only are they bringing in illegal high powered guns, they are manufacturing their own guns, and even rocket launchers.

There have been numerous busts of "gun factories" around Australia.
In one such factory, they were making high powered automatic assault rifles.

You think it's just about getting one AK47 off the street? It's about bringing these criminal gangs down for good, one step at a time.

How many times have they been caught with military grade rocket launchers as well? Too many.

And since you are in South Australia, I hope you remember that "former" Finks member whose home was targeted by the Hells Angels in a home invasion which ended up with his young underage son being shot.
Remember what the "former" Fink said in front of the tv cameras?
That "they" will find who did this, and get them back.

These people are bringing their violence onto our streets, into the public domain, and are not even afraid to make death threats on tv!!

You do realize that it's an ongoing investigation and police operation, and that the police aren't going to give you and me, the public, all of their intelligence on these criminal gangs right?

The entire 'assault weapon' argument is complete bull. If liberals really cared about dead kids then they would go to work curbing cheap pistols that thrive in the inner city.

Breakdown of murders by state by weapon: FBI Uniform Crime Report 2012

Breakdown of murders by race and sex: FBI Uniform Crime Report 2012

Please explain to me why legal gun owners are being harassed when in reality less than 3% of the population are accountable for 60% of the homicides, of which 90% are done with pistols?

Your ilk have nothing to counter this.

Your ilk? Do you mean rational people? Nobody is claiming that pistols are safe to have around, we're all well aware of how many murders are committed by these weapons, stupid is as stupid does....

However, are you seriously suggesting that high powered assault weapons are not capable of causing far more death and destruction than handguns? That being the case why are the military bothering with them? Why not just give them all a glock and say there you go, this guy on the net said these are just as deadly, go get em' guys

I think you are being disingenuous, im sure in 'merica they are common, however assault rifles are very rare in Australia....we'd prefer to keep it that way, we may have to tolerate you guys exporting all kinds of rubbish popular culture, but the gun culture....they can definitely keep that to themselves.
Thanks anyway,
Artlogic.

I think its sickening all these people talking of bikies as criminal gangs: Veterans, Coffin Cheaters, Angels are all community groups that support not just their members but the communities they live in. Once you lable them as criminals, and take their rights away, whats to stop the next public scape goat being cricket clubs? or netball clubs?

At frisr they came for the gypsies, but I was not one so I did not complain...

Ya know if we are going to go after any sporting clubs as criminal organisations--lets take down the #ing yacht clubs, because thats where most of the fascists in this country spend their Wednesday afternoons!.

And I dont care that the ADF were only "providing logistical support", the ADF should not be involved in civilian alleged criminal matters at all--they should be investigating dead hookers a lot close to home (ie: ********* Barracks).

you sure post a lot of nonsense here!

Fight for control of lucrative drug trade Mark Morri The Daily Telegraph August 01, 2013 12:00AM ABOUT 18 months ago a group of senior members of the Perth-based Coffin Cheaters flew into Sydney and immediately headed to Bondi Beach to tell the Comanchero they were taking over.

www.dailytelegraph.com.au...

So you claim they are just a community group supporting their community.... well, I suppose if their "community" consists of drug dealers you would be correct!

Remember this?

Members of the rival motorcycle gang, the Comancheros, and members of the Hells Angels were believed to be involved in a clash at Sydney Airport on Sunday, March 22, 2009. The clash resulted in one man, Hells Angels associate Anthony Zervas, being beaten to death

Remember this?
en.wikipedia.org...

7 dead, 28 injured.... but they are just "helping" the community1

What Yacht Clubs do you visit and in what country?
None of what you mention goes with Australian Yacht clubs, nor do we meet on Wednesdays, Its always Saturdays within the season and all we do is race sail boats that are between 1000 to 40,000 grand there is probably only a few expensive boats in the club.
Last I checked this was a Australian topic btw.

there are many bikies that ride for community charities all around australia, just because
they wear certain colors doesn't mean they are all drug pushers or on wanted lists needing to be
locked up the first chance police get.

a gang is just a group, where those who ride together will now be targeted, bikes siezed
or even crushed, not one that should be labled as an "outlaw" or menace to society.

Not to be confused with groups.

Im quite certain anyone who proves to not be involved with dodgy activity is quite safe from having there pride and joy remodeled into the much quieter and fuel efficient "Harley Cube" the laws are very specific.

I'm sure there are some well meaning people among the thugs, but frankly I am of the opinion that the odd ride for charity here and there smacks of propaganda, to believe that these gangs are anything but crime organizations on a very large scale is naive at best....

I can't help but think that either you or someone you know is involved in one of these gangs, if its someone you love like your son or your brother, you have my sympathies....

I'd also add that I see no reason whatsoever for someone who enjoys riding a motorcycle of any type to join a gang, seriously, is that a prerequisite when you purchase a Harley?
"Sorry sir, if you don't join a recognized criminal gang we can't give you the keys to your new bike"....said no salesman ever

Legitimate bike enthusiasts would be wise to choose there associates very very carefully....
