A battle is brewing in Islam. Not simply Muslims versus non, but within the faith itself. According to Fawaz Gerges, a professor of Middle Eastern and International Affairs at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y, . "It's not just between the Muslims and non-Muslims. It's also within Islam itself. It's a battle between moderate Muslims and extremist forces that threaten to hijack Islam."

ATHENS, Greece - The same day Dutch mourners gathered outside a crematorium for a final goodbye to slain filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, police on the other side of the world made a horrific discovery in a hut: the decapitated body of a Thai laborer.

The two events � in settings as different as tidy and prosperous Holland and a tropical rubber plantation in southern Thailand � bear similarities that suggest new flash points in the global struggle against radical Islam.

A note impaled on Van Gogh's body by the alleged Muslim killer threatened further attacks against Dutch politicians in the name of Islam. The body of the 60-year-old Buddhist worker in Thailand also was found last week with a message: "More will be killed" in revenge for the deaths of 85 Muslim protesters last month in a region with a mounting Islamic insurgency.

"The fault lines are growing," said Fawaz Gerges, a professor of Middle Eastern and International Affairs at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y. "It's not just between the Muslims and non-Muslims. It's also within Islam itself. It's a battle between moderate Muslims and extremist forces that threaten to hijack Islam."

Militant Islam is sprouting up all over the world. It is interesting to see a battle brewing within as the moderate elements begin to clash with the extremists. In those moderate elements we may find our biggest ally in this global terror war.

Of course there is. The moderates are educated and working and have thoughts of a future. The others are religious fanatics that scream Jihad

and recruit the poor and needy that have nothing to loose but life itself. Of which do you think there is more to form an army. It is similar to our volunteer army. Young people enlist because it is their opportunity to alter their lives.

Uhmm, the radicals are promoting the extermination of their enemies and the wholesale slaughter and targeting of civilians. They strap bombs onto mentally handicapped children and push them into intersections. They destroy schools and hack up aid workers and then use their funds to build religious schools that brainwash more children into thinking they will be rewarded for commiting mass murder. The US army accepts adult volunteers. There is an /enourmous/ difference between the two groups. Of course the US army has a lower representation of the Upper Class in it. This is /not/ the same as what the jihadis are doing.

I believe the professor is a dreamer. The moderate Muslims are in the minority and are keeping there mouths shut out of fear. The extremist are led and being funded by educated Muslims who do wish to exterminate all Christians and Jews throughout the world.
Have you heard any Muslims leaders condemming the actions of the extremist? The Muslims are doing the same thing the Third Reich did to the the Jewish population of Germany. They are preaching hate against anything that is Western in appearence.

I disagree. By that logic, should all of Europe hate the American people becuase they don't like our President? Not all leaders are militant. And by and large we are tainted in our view because all we see on TV is the extreem elements of any society.

FredT, name one prominent Muslim leader that has denounced the actions of the militant Muslims. In reference to to what you have seen on Western television you may have a valid point. Sex and violence is portrayed on the Alphabet channels on a daily bases. This rise in soft pornagraphy came about due to the challenge of cable television. Always remeber that sex sells in a Captialist society. Even if the West appears morally corrupte, it does not give any religion the right to physically strike out against it.

It is nothing new FredT, this has been going on for a long while now, but now this is making it to the news as if it was new....

Radicals have been beheading people long before the war in Iraq, or Afghanistan.....

Remember what the extremists keep saying..."their goal is to have the world dominated by Islam."

I agree with you. But this article was something new and alas only the radical get on TV. The squeeky wheel get the grease so to speak and while Im not a Muslem, it seems that ALL Muslems are getting lumped into the most likely to detonate a car bomb.

The article shows that its far from a united camp and that other in the religion feel as we do.

That is true, there are moderates that do not have the same views as radicals, many of these people live in the US or other countries, and have assimilated the American/western lifestyle. Some of these people include members of the Bin Laden family...yet very quickly we have seen that people bash every member of the Bin Laden family, as if they were all part of Osama's plots, when quite the contrary he has declared war against many of his relatives for accepting the American/west way of life and living as Americans. The same happens to many moderate Muslims, they also get killed by the extremists.

The problem is that also many extremists have infiltrated most countries in the world and they are working hard on achieving their goals.
