"The state Board of Judicial Conduct had recommended that Ballentine be permanently relieved of her duties. The board also recommended that Ballentine
pay back the $104,330 in salary — and more than $13,000 in medical benefits — she had received since first being suspended.
Instead, the discipline court suspended Ballentine without pay for three and a half months, through May 31. She owes about $20,000, according to the
order.
Ballentine is allowed to keep salary she earned from February 2012 through February 2013, along with benefits, according to the order.
"The severe discipline recommended by the Board is not necessary in order to preserve the integrity of our judicial system and the public's confidence
in it," the order states.
Some legal professionals say that logic will be a tough sell."
