Cheers for that Raxoxane, I didn't see that anywhere, but seems as though there is some kind of answer to the riddle of the picture now. He was calling the picture ugly and it turns out to be a member of his family...Brill...

This whole thing still makes me think of that Rowan Atkinson movie,Mr Bean,where he is staying in America with an art gallery manager(played to perfection by the brilliant Peter McNichol) and is mistaken as an art expert-and his impromptu speech about the painting of Whistler's mother,something along the lines of:"..this amazing painting of an ugly old bat that looked like she had a carrot lobbed up her backside,whom he(Whistler) thought the world of.."
