An Embraer EMB-120, identified as 5N-BJY, crashed on takeoff in Lagos this morning. The aircraft was reportedly on a charter flight carrying the body of a Nigerian politician home to Akure.

There have been 14 fatalities reported, with six survivors confirmed.

Firefighters had the fire out almost immediately after the crash, which is probably one reason there were survivors.

The death toll is up to 16 now, with four survivors. A witness said it was making a loud noise before the crash, and appeared to maneuver to avoid a residential area.
