I work at an elementary school in Kentucky, and I had to share this real quick. I just watched the principal allow a local Gideon's group to enter the school and give out bibles to students! I am OUTRAGED! You can't force religion down the throats of young kids while they are at a PUBLIC SCHOOL! I even took photos of the horrendous event!

Doesn't look like anyone is being forced to take a New Testament.

Force religion?? How is giving out free bibles forcing anything?? They aren't forcing parents to purchase one!

Since when did the bible turn into something that parents get outraged over if their child wants to read it?? This world is a scary place sometimes...

You should put some kind of warning on those pictures, I mean what if young people see children being forced like this.

Look at the horror on their young faces, as they're being forced to take them, the terror in their eyes as they're compelled to read it.

Forced I tell you, forced.

ETA, if they're free, can you grab one for me?

I may be mistaken, but from your photographs, it looks as if the children have an option here. They can either pick up a testament, or leave it. No one being forced in this case. Tell me, do the children have the ability to opt out of any 'natural' sciences classes that espouse that the earth is billions of years old? From what i recall of when i was in school, no one gave me detention for not picking up a bible in public school, yet if i didn't go to their classes that i didn't agree to, i was penalized. Now that sounds like being forced to me.

If you don't want a bible, don't pick one up. Let the kids make their own choice. The principal is merely giving them the option to take it or leave it.

(mutters to himself, shaking his head in wonderment)

How can the kids make an educated decision if you don't give them options?

Exactly! Where are the free Torahs, Qur'ans, Vedas, and Tipitakas (Buddhist holy text) for the students as well? If they are to make an informed decision they should be given all the material to work with right? Not just some preconceived notion that Christianity is automatically the correct religion.

Don't pay any attention to the ATS bible-thumpers. It is an outrage. Bibles have no business in schools, even if no one was actually being forced to take or read them. Just take one and burn it. It will make you feel better.

Preconceived? Not at all....It IS the correct religion....

So says the lord.....Not a prophet, not a monk, not a child, not a fat butt, not anything other than the lord....

So, yeah, it is the correct religion....

Wow, Really?

Why don't you throw on your swastika and go have a good bible burning?

A table with free bibles that someone can pick up! Wow, next they will have constitutions!

Damn, has the lefty huffpo crowd really went this far in their hatred of Christianity (only, all other religions are ok) that even the site of a bible causes that "invasion of the body snatchers" sound?

Of course, taking kids on a field trip to visit Mosques and being handed Korans and visiting a Hindu Temple (or else you have to write an essay if you refuse) is just fine right? Of course the HuffPo crowd thinks so but OMG, A BIBLE that can be SEEN sitting on a table! Holy Crap, Burn the Witches!

You need to ask the Jewish, Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist version of the Gideons that.

And if they were there, my response would be exactly the same.

Religion has no place in public schools. They are breaking the law.

Distribution of Gideon Bibles

In Berger v. Rensselaer School Corp. ̧ 982 F.2d at 1165 - 66 (7 th Cir.), cert. Denied. U.S. 113 S. Ct. 2344 (1993) the court ruled that the Gideons Society practice of distributing Bibles to public school students in fifth grade class- rooms was unconstitutional. The court found both the Gideons in - school presentation as well as the practice of stacking Bibles by the classroom door with the encouragement to take one to violate the Establishment Clause. Although the teachers did not distribute the Bibles, and the students were not required to take a Bible, the court found the practice to be an unconstitutional governmental endorsement of religion. The court noted that the availa- bility of Bibles to students in schools carried the stamp of school endorsement simply because they were made available to students during instructional time and with the permission of the school. The fact that distribution oc- curs during school hours could lead a reasonable student to believe that the school endorses the program

I have no problem with this. Actually, they do this from time to time at the school my youngest son attends and last year there were Muslims handing out little books that outlines the Koran and Islam.

I didn't have a problem with that.

What I do have a problem with is that we complain about this....but when they force the kids to take home "fundraising" packets to "raise money" for the school....we have no problems with it. In fact, we think its cute to ask the family to buy some outrageously priced cookie dough or christmas wrapping, not realizing that we are letting our children become an army of salespeople for corporate "fundraising" scams.

If you want to talk about indoctrination or force......its there. The outrage should be at the cookie dough....not Jesus.

I've written a thread that runs the numbers on these fundraising scams but I will not post a link in this thread. If you want to see it....look through my profile.

Genuine question, not trolling but curious, would the same apply out of hours?

I think the law, Constitution and precedent is clear on this and I don't care what faith someone is or what politics they are. This is WRONG. Period. Full Stop.

If that was a Quran or a Torah or a LDS Bible being distributed, would we be as nice and happy? We shouldn't be. The separation of Church and State...while not written in those words...is absolutely held as self evident and as real as anything else in legal theory today.

They can't peddle religion ON Public School property to school kids. I've been through this with groups in this area at my son's own school. They can stand 6 inches off the legal surveyed property line as the courthouse records it to be. (Yes...it gets that specific with some jerks) but if they cross it, they'll be escorted back across to a marked police unit for removal. Their choice as to whether they want to play the game once or twice. Third time doesn't happen ....since it's a cop car by then, as I understand it.

No one around here that I have seen has been ignorant enough to test that more than once...at least that I've seen. Good, too... Folks who feel strongly about it feel ABSOLUTE about it. Like me....and I tend to respect all Faiths...in their place. That's a private place in each person's own life, IMO.
