This just confirmed by a Mississippi congressman this morning. He stated that flights from Chicago will be arriving today. He's worried about them being turned away and not shown the respect they deserve.

Did you know that the WWII memorial was built with private dollars? So why put up barracades? Simply for show.....

Funny you mention it. He was there yesterday and helped move the barricades for the vets. Most of whom were from MISSISSIPI.

Politicians are riding on our 80 and 90 year old veterans' coattails...The veterans did their job....the politicians have not done theirs. None of this would be an issue if Congress had done their job. Let volunteers "man" the memorials. Congress needs to get to work and pass a complete budget or turn in their resignation and let one of these veterans sit in their seat...we'd all be much better off with their knowing hands at the helm.

It's not over...not even close.

Veterans Plot To Expand Revolt Against Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON — Military veterans are declaring war on the government shutdown.
After a group of veterans broke down the barricades at the national World War II Memorial Tuesday afternoon, organizers of one Hero Flight Network group told BuzzFeed it wasn’t the last Washington would hear from them. Veterans are plotting another protest at the same place Wednesday, and expressed interest in staging similar events at sites across the nation’s capital, including the Lincoln Memorial — an act of civil disobedience that would likely pour fuel on the already highly flammable politics of the government shutdown.

“We have people here that are 80 and 90 years old and they closed down all the bathrooms?” said Tony Nussbaum, a 25-year veteran of the Air Force from Iowa and a leader of the state’s Hero Flight group. “I’m about to just start pissing on the trees.”

The World War II Memorial on the National Mall became a political battlefield Tuesday, with conservatives excoriating Democrats for the monument’s closure as they escorted busloads of war veterans past bewildered park rangers and into the shuttered monument.

On Wednesday, the scene could repeat itself when groups from the Honor Flight Network — a national charity that brings aging World War II veterans to visit the national monument to the conflict they fought in — are scheduled to arrive at the massive outdoor memorial. Meanwhile, veterans have pondered staging a similar protest at the Lincoln memorial, said Jamie Miller, a five-year veteran of the Marine Corps and another organizer of the Iowa group that stormed the World War II memorial Tuesday.

“We are thinking about jumping the Lincoln memorial too,” he said. “If Lincoln was a war memorial I would do it in a heart beat.”

Veterans do not want or need to be a political side show and that is stressed in this article.

No offense to the OP, but if you have "access" to that Congressman, et al, who intend to posture and break down "barriers" today, ask them this, "What kind of message are you sending?"

Plain and simple you are demonstrating that the proper response is to break the law if you don't agree with it. Are you nutz? You made it illegal for veterans to visit their own memorial and now you are demonstrating that the proper response is to break the law? No. Congress. Fix the law. That was your job. The veterans can get through tape and gates just fine without your microphones. Your job Congress is to make laws which you expect people to abide by. And they wonder why we are questioning their leadership? Psssst....our kids are watching....and our veterans.

I agree that in most cases you should not break laws just because you disagree with another, but these veterans have given so much to this country and to all of us, that the least we could do is move a small metal barrier so these men in the last days of their lives, could visit a memorial that was erected by private donors in their honor.

I don't have a line of communication with Congressman Paluzzo and Congresswoman Bachman, but the example they are setting is "Stand up" and fight for those that have fought for you.

The closure of open air man made and natural monuments is absurd.

As if there is some parks employee turning a crank to make Mt Rushmore, the Grand Canyon and and the WWII Memorial appear?

They're making an issue where none exists.

It took some employee more time and hence more money to close off the place than had they just walked away and left it open.

Furthermore, the GOP presented an admendment to the budget yesterday and today that would allow memorials like the WWII memorial to remain open for these veterans and others.

It fell on deaf ears. Maybe better luck today. Highly doubtful.

It is all spite, there is no reason for these places to be shut down, just like there was no reason for Obama to stop the W.H. tours.

Well yes, it is costing more to shut them down then to keep them open.

Obama admin. knew about WWII veterans’ request and rejected it

Read more: dailycaller.com...

He is a monster

The White House and the Department of the Interior rejected a request from Rep. Steven Palazzo’s office to have World War II veterans visit the World War II memorial in Washington, the Mississippi Republican told The Daily Caller Tuesday.

Palazzo helped the veterans commit an act of civil disobedience against the Park Service Tuesday, when the heroes stormed through barricades around the closed memorial. (Related: WWII vets storm closed memorial as GOP congressman reportedly distracts cops)

The veterans were visiting the memorial as part of Honor Flight, a non-profit that provides veterans free transport to the nation’s capital to visit the memorials to the wars they fought in.

“We got the heads up that they will be barricaded and specifically asked for an exception for these heroes,” Palazzo told TheDC. “We were denied and told, ‘It’s a government shutdown, what do you expect?’ when we contacted the liaison for the White House.”

Palazzo’s office was in touch with the heads of the National Park Service, the Department of the Interior and the Capitol Police. He says all these officials rejected his request to allow the veterans, many of whom are octogenarians and some of whom are in poor health, to attend.

Palazzo, a Gulf War Marine veteran who has participated in all five of the Honor Flights, blames the White House for making it harder on veterans and playing politics. “At first I thought it was a huge bureaucratic oversight,” Palazzo told The Daily Caller, “but having talked with the officials I can’t help but think this was politically motivated. Honor Flights, which bring WWII veterans to the nation’s memorials, are planned a year in advance and cost anywhere between $80,000 to $100,000. How low can you get with playing politics over our nation’s veterans?”

In a statement, Palazzo noted that he is introducing legislation to ensure that all Honor Flights are granted access this week. “This is an open-air memorial that the public has 24/7 access to under normal circumstances — even when Park Service personnel aren’t present,” Palazzo said in the statement. “It actually requires more effort and expense to shut out these veterans from their Memorial than it would to simply let them through. My office has been in touch with NPS officials and the Administration to try to resolve this issue.”

WWII Veterans Plan To Storm Lincoln Memorial Today, Closed Due To Obama Admin Pettiness

You don't know how angry this makes me.

The general population in and around Washington should be up in arms about this and joining the Vets.

I am sick of this .

So shameful. Yesterday was pretty uneventful, but it is said that mounted police will be on site today. I have a feeling that they will cross without trouble again today..... I hope.

Veterans don't need Congress members to break the law and move the barriers. I have stood on Normandy Beach and seen where they have been. It is haunting and I cannot even imagine what they endured and sacrificed. Veterans and their families know how to get in somewhere they need to be. Obviously. They have every right to walk or roll across these memorial grounds. And they will. I hope every out of work Federal employee shows up today to usher them in, as citizen volunteers.

What these veterans need is for Congress to have never made it illegal in the first place. Now our representatives have resorted to breaking the laws they enacted. Do they not understand what type of action, on anything anyone finds near and dear personally, they are inviting and modeling? This isn't a game. Do as I say, not as I do mentality and lawmakers breaking laws is a slippery slope to a very dangerous place they cannot possibly control. Everything matters to someone.

Stand up and fight what? Their own reflections?

Hahaha, slightly smaller than the amount of dirt they'll use to fill in the Grand Canyon.

The Republicans have the ability to end this, they refuse.

All they have to do is drop the partisan politics out of a funding bill and everything re-opens.

The Democrats are absolutely right to deny any partial funding bill, Republicans are trying to use these veterans as a political football, it is quite shameful.

That "football" wouldnt even be in play if somebody didnt come up with the hair-brained scheme to fence off an outdoor monument.

It's like cutting down all the trees to keep people from seeing a national forest. I know the gov thinks it's all that but the world still turns and the monument still exists even if there isnt a guy with a patch and a funny hat standing there.

The Park Service is in charge of those monuments. Including the safety, security, and cleaning of those monuments. It's a nice cozy picture to show around 50 vets being pushed in wheelchairs at this monument, but that isn't all that would be there if they just left them opened but unattended.

I'd give it 3 days before the monuments are full of trash and just trashed to a disrespectful point. Not to mention vandalism or being filled up with homeless for a sleeping spot.

Bottom line is that the Park Service needs to do this because they are no longer getting paid and most likely not even allowed to work due to insurance issues. So the options are close the monuments...or leave them unsecured and left to be trashed.

It's an easy call to me.

It makes NO sense to me why, if a park has NO services or facilities, it should be "closed." That's just stupid.

And yet they throw up barricades JUST to keep people "out?" That's like saying due to the city shutdown the sidewalk is closed, or central park is closed.

WTF is wrong with the government?

Somebody kick these folks out.
