With all of the recent shootings, threats of terror and the uncertainty in these troubling times, this was a good little article I found to help remind us all of the basics in what to do to survive a public shooting spree. Feel free to add any of your own thoughts and suggestions as well.

Here's What To Do If You're In Public And Bullets Start To Fly

You’re in public, minding your business, on your way to work — and gunshots ring out. This rare, but terrifying scenario is something that all of us should consider with the prevalence of mass shootings in modern times. There have been five in the U.S. just this year alone, not to mention the staggering number of gun deaths in America. So here are immediate actions you can take to ensure your survival, which I learned during my time as a U.S. Marine.

Don’t freak out. Don't scream. Stay calm.

1. Hit The Deck!
This seems like common sense. Matter of fact, all of these will seem like common sense. But you wouldn't believe how many people hear gunfire in a public place and just stand around, heads all in the air, bewildered, looking this way and that.
Get low! The first thing you need to do is remove your dome from the where the bullets will be. So ... lower it.

2. Don't Scream
If you find yourself in a situation like this, keep your mouth shut. The last thing you want to do is make the shooter notice you.
That includes talking on your cell phone—stay off of it, especially if you're in a city or other populated public place, where people who are within earshot but outside the danger zone can call the police.
Authorities might even be on the spot.

3. Conceal Yourself
Seems like common sense, right?
But again, some people will sit well within sight of a perpetrator. Put something in between you and the shooter, preferably something that blocks his sight completely, but anything that offers a bit of misdirection (like tall grass) will help.
If he can't see you, he'll have trouble shooting you.

4. Find Cover
Cover and concealment are not the same thing. Concealment is just about sight, whereas cover actually conceals and stops bullets. This could be a concrete embankment, like the one pictured here.
Cars are not cover! They are concealment. This isn't the movies. Bullets go through cars. If a car is your only choice, however, security experts tell Business Insider to place the engine between yourself and the shooter.
Otherwise, quietly find some earth, stone, or steel to hide behind.

5. Identify The Threat, Move Away
This is the last step.
From your position, Try to identify where the threat is, then move away slowly, keeping a low profile, keeping that piece of cover or concealment between you and the threat.
Don't be a hero! Leave that up to our men and women in uniform.
I can't tell you not to try and save an old lady, or a child, or a friend. Admittedly I would try to save any one of them. But just know the risk.

One thing I wonder when there are multipal shooters committing the terror event, how to stay safe from the authorities when they come in? They say that you should place your hands on your head and head towards them, but that just seems like another chance to get between them and the bullets flying by the bad guys. Any suggestions?

Lets talk about this because I for one would like to survive a shooting spree but more importantly, to have drills with my family for public places. I mean we have talked about it happening at school, but not other public places.

What about the handicapped or disabled, the very young?

A timely and well advised piece of info here, especially after I just did a Thread on a man walking into a church and shooting the preacher today. Thank goodness he did not turn his gun on the audience.
This info is basic and common sense, but should definitely be in our minds as to what to do in such a dire situation. They should run this in every Sunday paper across the US. Good thread and thanks.

Very timely indeed. From school and movie theater shootings and now even our religious sanctuaries are not safe, whether copy cat or not they seem to keep coming these days, and if the economy , healthcare and the rest continue to rise I fear it will only get worse.

Here's What To Do If You're In Public And Bullets Start To Fly
Get to cover, look for injuries, remove gun from holster.
Look, listen and be aware.
Try to help anyone near you escape, or treat them if they have injuries and if possible.
If you must confront the gunman, use well placed shots.
Always remember to act, a person shooting in public is most likely going to kill you anyway, so do what you can to help save others.

This is only my opinion, and if you don't have a gun, the same still applies.

Every situation is unique. Something that may increase the chances of survival in one scenario, may not work the same for a different set of circumstances with a different shooter.

First off imagine all the social situations that take place every second of the day/night, every day all across the US. I think that if there has only been five this year, odds are extremely low that anyone will have to have to deal with this situation. Then this is thrown in about the "staggering number of gun deaths in America".

Alot of people on ATS like to use the term "DOOM PORN". I think this is doom porn at its finest and most subtle. This article was written to further push the anti gun agenda because the FEDS want complete control(there purpose for complete control I am unsure of), and they cant have control if the everyday Good person in America(of which there is alot of) continues to exercise there right to be gun owners. Stop spreading worthless propaganda.

Scary thoughts, not really sure how I would react, would I place a stranger before my self? Would I shield a baby or head for the door? I know what I "think" I would do, but until the bullets start to fly and you are the target, hard to be fully honest. I think we are all cowards and heroes. I would take a bullet to save my children, this I know. I would act to save lives after the gunmen are caught. What would happen in between, would have to be between me and God and the moment.

Good on you for posting this. I have been in shooter situations (believe it or not, more than one) in a past line of work and people get hurt over just simply not keeping their cool.

Another thing to point out is recent law enforcement training and how to act around police. They will fire upon anything running towards them or grabbing them so it is also important to know that the cops are there to shoot the suspect first and to help you second. If there is still a shooter, don't even think about engaging the police unless they are asking you questions. This is also why it's important to not play Rambo with your CW if you think any cops or other CWCs are around.

I dont agree with your thoughts on my intent.

I am a huge proponent for guns and their necessity in keeping the country a safer place.

There is no reason to doubt me or think I am up to some kind of mind control agenda against the second or any of the others...

This is absolutely correct. Your best bet is to stay calm and judge the situation as best you can. If you are armed and are well trained or have some combat experience and think you can avoid shooting the wrong person or being shot by security or another armed person then you might try and take the shooter out. That of course will require a clear head and some dumb luck.

To anyone with a gun permit and a gun on them at the time, follow the same rules as above only if you can, shoot the bad guy.

That why people carry personal guns right?

Excellent point, so if you have a legal permit and something goes down, and you are trying to help save lives, how do you stay alive once the LEOS arrive?

They like to shoot the living, so my thoughts are to play dead.
And carry ketchup packets with you, they add to the effect.

I was talking more about the intent of the article itself. I think this article was meant to spread fear.

True and some more common sense in a crazy world, however the professionals have to train, they have to learn to think outside the box, so do you think it better that the Mother with the baby , the elderly person, the student be given the chance to learn how to cope with and stay focused and calm in a shooter scenario verses not discussing it at all and being taken by shock and surprise if they find themselves in this situation?

I think some good and solid questions have already come forward I mean, who wants to be mistaken for the culprit as mentioned here already, THAT was a revelation to me.

My personal advice is to holster your weapon and show your hands while concealing yourself when the police show up. If you ask police officers, you'll get several different answers, depending on if they themselves have ever been in that situation.

Put yourself in the shoes of an officer, especially a green one. If he shows up to respond to a shooter and sees you waving around a gun or trying to get a decent line of fire (no matter how responsible you look), he will probably fire on you.

There is no easy answer to it and it often comes down to the instincts and experience of the police who respond. There are virtually zero situations where a police officer will encourage or welcome a civilian shooting into the mix but I think even the cops are aware that armed civilians have, at times, been able to "save the day" before the calvary shows up.

You won't find a solid consensus on it from LEOs nor civilians.

Ah ok thanks for the clarification, i didn't take it that way, but I can see how it is portrayed a bit like that they are more competent in taking a shooter down or the LEOs than the responsibility of the people being killed. I have often wondered if something like this came down if it would be possible to just gang up on the shooter and take him down rather than allow everyone to be killed.
