Meteor(??) sighting above the Australian skies, pic's included.

With the ok from my teen daughter, we'd like to share some images she captured this evening of what seems to be a meteor.

The pictures were taken in the South East Queensland region in the western sky, at an approximate 35-40 deg' elevation.

She was on an evening jog around 5.45-5.50pm, AEST (UTC +10.00) and noticed an unusual light in the sky. She runs with an a ipod 5g and managed to grab these shots.




The four images were taken within a two minute period and the overall sighting lasted inside 4mns.

What strikes me as unusual though, is the trajectory of the object and the elapsed time of the sighting.

Meteor... for now.

Gotta say those are some excellent daytime shots.

With the sightings that have been had over the past few days, I am going to have to go with meteor as well on this one.

Hopefully others from "down under" will report any sightings for more correlation.

With all the meteors being sighted in the sky, how long before one actually touches down and does a bit of damage?

I don't think a meteor can last for 4 minutes in suspension, especially if they go over 70000mph!

I would say it was a plane making a contrail, or a chemtrail, depending on the side of the fence you are.

There's no air traffic of note in the direction of the sighting - the closest being a descending aircraft from the N/W.

That was no Meteor,meteors last for a few seconds not 2 minutes...

probably a plane with contrail hit by the sun?

Meteors travel on the low end around 25000 miles an hour. Most are faster than that. At speeds like this, one could circle the entire Earth in less than an hour. Not that they do that of course. In 4 minutes a slow meteor then would travel around 1680 miles, or 2700 kilometers.

If she saw it for more than a few seconds, it probably wasn't a meteor.

I think Singapore Airlines flight 281 is the culprit
Singapore to Auckland. It passed Brisbane at 39,000 feet at about 07:50 UTC.

If you are using planefinder etc to track the flights using playback you have to use GMT time zone not local time iirc

Oh and as others have said sunlit contrail.

The resolution is too low in the pictures to resolve whether a plane is present in the photograph or not. I could not spot one.
