Topic started on 14-11-2004 @ 08:32 AM by IKnowNothing

These artifacts were found near South Padre Island, which according to archaeologists was a fishing camp for nomadic people.

Neat find! Material in that area is difficult to locate because at about that time, the sea level was rising and the barrier islands along the coastline were starting to form.

It's not the oldest site in Texas. The site that my archaeology class (I'm a grad student; not the teacher) is working on has some artifacts that have been dated to be 4,000 years old, but if memory serves the rock art of White Shaman and Bell Shelter are both in the 5,000 year range. And there's a site here in North Texas that is being presented as a Clovis site and has been more or less reliably dated to around 9,500 BC.

Wasn't there a related find, some years ago, where there was evidence of a Roman mining camp somewhere in upstate wisconsin, or michigan, or somewhere in that area?

I was pretty sure I'd heard something about Romans in America.
