The Palestinians have finally set a date for the elections of a new president which is planned to be held on 9 January.
Since elections must be held in 60 days of a presidents death.
As the elections come up this will be a great opportunity for the Palestinians to open up a better dialogue with their Israeli counter parts for a better chance of peace in the region.

The move was announced by interim President Rawhi Fattuh.

A caretaker collective leadership has been in place in since Mr Arafat's death last Thursday.

Palestine Liberation Organisation head and former Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas has been chosen by the dominant Fatah faction to run as its candidate.

Mr Abbas has been considered a strong contender to take over the Palestinian presidency from Mr Arafat.

Other potential successors include the Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei, who has taken charge of the Palestinian Authority, and Farouk Kaddoumi, who was appointed as head of Fatah after Mr Arafat's death.

If this goes well and the new government can get
A new ceasefire,
There should be a big chance for the peace plan to go ahead since the US/Israel authorities didn’t before was because of Arafat,
With a new government this should be different

Palestinian militants have burst into a mourning tent for Yasser Arafat, firing shots in protest at the presence of his potential successor, Mahmoud Abbas.
Mr Abbas was hustled away unhurt, but at least one security guard was killed in the incident in Gaza City.
