Your source is incorrect.

I am sorry, but life line does not fund cell phones and is far from free. It's a cheaper plan with zero bells an whistles. Long distance is blocked, ect. It is still $9 a month and given that you can get a plan for $10-12 and be able to call long distance for a fee it isn't worth it. It DOES NOT pay part of your phone bill like the article says. And the cell phone distribution is limited to Victims of domestic violence. It may be possible that other groups such as the disabled can get them, I can't confirm that, but I can confirm that it is not for the general poor.

Cornell stated that the lyrics for "Hunger Strike" express "somewhat of a political, socialist statement."[4] The song puts forth the theme of stealing bread to give to the poor and protesting in solidarity with them via a hunger strike after witnessing injustice in food distribution.

I have to say that I'm dismayed. Our society truly sucks. I believe in helping the poor. I believe in loving those less fortunate, and even loving those who cause their own lives to be in shambles. But reading this thread, I got the feeling that having a phone seemed to be more important than having the basic needs to sustain life. Is this where we are?

"I'm starvin' but at least I have a Galaxy S4!"

I'm sorry if that is not where you guys were going with this, but wow. I firmly believe that we as a country have severely misplaced our priorities. I even saw one person post something about how those of us who work are idiots? Not sure if he was joking, but if not, wow. I have no delusions that working in this day and age is a skewed endeavor, but I would rather earn my way and work hard to put food on the table. As the saying goes, "nothing in this world is free."

Enjoy yourself on your own dime. Is this really too much to ask? What, people who actually work should pay so that people who don't work can enjoy themselves? Is it too much to ask for people to give something back to society?

Your statement is confusing..... Enlighten me.

As a person who lives on employment support allowance due to sickness I can understand what its like to be living poorly but where I think the problem arises is when people on welfare bemoan how little it is while talking about having multiple mobile phones and wide screen TV's.

Unfortunately this isn't helped when the media focus in the states on the so called poor black families running around putting wine and other stuff on their EBT and having clothes that cost a fortune only to then complain it isn't enough for their 5 children.

People on welfare obviously SHOULD be allowed to enjoy themselves, its a vicious place to be so some happiness is VITAL but live to your means, if you have multiple children then make sure the bulk of what is left from vital bills is spent on them. You brought them in to the world and you damn well should look after them and NOT expect someone else to pay for them.

Its odd, I live on a really bad council estate but yet every family I have met who lives from the welfare state has every creature comfort and over priced luxuries. Always the latest phones, always a new big TV, Blu rays, expensive clothing, a car, Sky TV, basically you name it, they have it.

I presume they are fiddling the dole and some actually say "well every one does it"...sigh..

I live with my wife and 13yr old daughter, our clothes are from places like ASDA George range, I still have the same TV I had 14yrs ago, a crt. I also have the DVD player I brought when in work, no Sky TV, no fancy iPhones, ours are the cheapest phones in the shop, 20 UK. Yes I have the internet but we rarely ever drink, we don't smoke, and we don't do recreational drugs and we don't have a social life.

That's how I have the Internet....Also because of my mental health issues and mobility problems the internet serves as my gateway to the outside world.

So, to those on benefits who drink like fish, smoke and party then complain they don't get enough money then 2 fingers to you.

To those that get by on the welfare and maybe have the odd luxury then fair enough, the welfare is a very draining way to live, trying to organise your daughters Xmas present instead of food for a few days ISN'T fun but as getting welfare money is a privilege and NOT a right I don't moan, I'm just happy to get what I get and attempt to spend it wisely.

For those that would say the internet is a luxury I agree but it comes out of what I get, I don't ask anyone to top my money up to pay for it and its almost impossible with a school age child not to have some form of internet connection.

After 30 plus years of working I think the internet is a tiny luxury for me...

People seem to forget that anyone can use the Internet for free at the nearest public library.

Edit to clarify, you mentioned the Internet in your OP. I'm pointing out to the judgmental that not everyone has service at home.

ignorance is crippling your ability to function.

first of all:
1. Not one dime of the income tax goes to anyone getting foodstamps.
2. It's none of your BUSINESS, why someone is getting foodstamps, so mind your own BUSINESS.
3.Please take the time to educate yourself, and dont speak till yo have obtained enough knowledge so that you KNOW what your talking about.

I really get upset at those who beliitle others and tell them what they should be doing.
I, have never recieved any benefit from any government, can you say the same?
people who bitch about others "getting fat off the government dole" are ignorant idiots.
Ill bet the starter of this thread gets all kinds of "benefits at "taxpayer" expense.

Truth is... the economic system in place is designed for the incurring of human obligations,
If you didnt know.....DEBT=MONEY. Im not going to give a 2 hour lecture on why this so.
people on foodstamps get that benefit because of something called THE NEW DEAL.

if those people didnt get foodstamps they would starve.

My mother gets foodstamps, she gets 78 dollars a month. she is disabled and worked for many years paying those taxes, she is ENTITLED to the benefits.

so please take your holier than thou attitude and stick it up your A##.

I've seen a few people mention in this thread that people could just use the library for internet use. But what if the tiny little town you live in does NOT have a library and if they do have something they call a library(but really shouldn't be called that, since it has ONE dino computer!) and it isn't even open until the weekends. How is someone supposed to fill out applications(which are mostly online apps anymore) for work, when they arise, if they have no where to do it?

Sure there may be a real library in the towns over, one 14 miles and the 20 miles in opposite directions, but what if that person has no car? Hell even gas to drive that far if they DID own a car would be more than some cheap home internet might cost them. Not everything is black and white, you can't just make some statement and think it will work for everyone.

Just my 2 cents...kinda ranty, sorry.

Your source is incorrect.

And the other million sources are incorrect too, obviously, because you know what your talking about.

These guys:

Happily, if you’re finding yourself financially unable to keep up with the bills and charges that come with owning a cell phone, you may qualify for a free phone and plan supplied by the government. The government understands the importance of being able to connect with those around us, be it for professional, or even personal reasons. Cell phones allow us to communicate with our communities, families, and friends.

source
are obviously incorrect, as are time magazine:

The Universal Service Fund provides discounts on phone services, or in some cases, entirely free services to low-income Americans. The fund helps pay for landlines or cell phones, whichever the recipient prefers. There’s also a one-time discount of up to $30 to cover an installation fee or a cell phone. Considering how cheap some cell phones are nowadays, the money more than covers the costs of a basic phone. Then, the fund covers phone bills to the tune of $10 a month, which typically translates as 250 minutes for wireless plans of the types of phones we’re talking about. Americans who receive food stamps, Medicaid, or other federal aid, or who earn up to 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, qualify for the program.

and USAToday:

If you meet certain low-income requirements, you can receive a free basic cell phone with a free calling plan of 250 minutes per month. You may also be eligible to receive a $10 per month broadband Internet connection and a low-cost desktop or laptop computer for your family.

I don't have time to show how wrong the other 999,9997 sources I mentioned are.

I haven't read all the posts, but I reserve my remarks for those bearing an un-samaritan attitude towards those needing welfare aid.

Last September I was made redundant. It's the first time I have been unemployed for over 30 years. Now, I am past 50 years of age, and although I tend to get an interview once a month, no company wants to take on somebody of my age, skill set, and experience. So, a year on I am still out of work.

Now. Before signing on for 'Job Seekers Allowance' (JSA) I lived off my redundancy pay for five months, hoping I would find alternate employment. I was unemployed for five months before reluctantly and forcibly finding myself needing to claim JSA. You get £142-00 every two weeks.

In the year of unemployment I have seen my fortunes dip way below poverty level. I am single, live alone, and pretty much isolated, having no friends or anybody to whom I can turn. It is what it is.

I pay £60-00 out of that £142 to the Electric company, so in real terms, I am living on £82-00 a fortnight.

Did I cause this? Did I opt to make fraudulent claims for welfare just so I could sit on my backside, and not work. No! I didn't. I was earning very good money whilst working. I didn't lose my job. I didn't put it down somewhere and forget where I placed it. I lost my job because of the banksters crashing the economies forcing governments to make austerity measures which affected the company I worked for...hence redundancies.

Right now, as I write this. I have no food in the larder. I won't receive my £82.00 until three full days from now, and already I am very hungry, having had the last of my food 8am Thursday morning. So now, I am on a forced fast.

If I was on the street right now, and I overheard someone bad-mouthing the unemployed, I'd smack them in the mouth. I am sick to death of people believing the myths propagated through prejudice. So no doubt, having openly declared my situation, one or two of you will be smiling smugly and thinking I deserve it.

When I was working, I could take nights out in Manchester city centre, and it would be me putting money in the pockets of the beggars in the street, while my drinking mates would chastise me for doing so. "Don't give them money," they'd say, "they are just scroungers!"

I didn't care if they were faking it, because I didn't know if they were, I couldn't tell, and I don't have prejudice in my heart or mind. Now, I need help, but I've no one to turn to. I hate having to accept welfare, because I value my independence very highly. Things are not going to change for me or others until we secure employment.

So, in future, before you bad mouth a person for taking welfare, thank your lucky stars it's not you!

From my experience food banks are far and few between now days and are mostly empty except around the holidays when all of the sudden people decide to donate. Same with churches. At least in the U.S. anyways.
A couple of years back I did some volunteer work and it was mostly the volunteers donating food. There was maybe several canned goods and a few boxes of food a week total brought in. Not even close enough to meet the demand.

Those who are able, I urge you to donate outside of the holiday season. Donating at holidays is great, but that doesn't feed people the rest of the year.

Pro:

A lot of poor households purchase lots of convenience foods, or buy fast-food because it's convenient, without being fully aware of the sacrifice they are choosing. This is real-world; I volunteer with a homeless shelter, and you'd be surprised how many working poor eat fast food daily. The homeless shelter has a "model kitchen" like you'd find in a cheap apartment; we teach people how to make spaghetti, as well as how to cook up and freeze burritos--they can thaw in your pocket or car while you are at work.

Many children of the poor really do suffer from mild malnutrition due to sugary breakfasts and snack foods. The damage is temporary, but drags down their academic performance with hypertension and attention disorders.

Con:

People in crisis can most easily be comforted by small gifts that normalize the moment. We call them 'comfort foods' for a reason. A hot cookie or an ice cream sandwich can make a TV-dinner seem more like a real meal. If you just got laid off, a buck-fifty candy bar isn't the difference between finding a job or being unemployed.

I'm jumping through so many hoops to get awarded SSIDisability that I might as well get a job at Seaworld.

(According to the SSA I have not one, but 4 documented and diagnosed disabilities. They're all listed right in their own medical guidebook.) I ate into savings and mooched off relatives (God bless them) for a year before I finally got myself on some food stamps. I just completed my first month on the SNAP benefits and I find that it's WAYYY more than enough to keep myself fed. I almost feel a little bad with my excess benefits for this month.

However, I'm going to indulge a little with these excess benefits because I'm still not getting awarded what I truly deserve: recognition of my disabling conditions! If you want me out on the street freezing to death, just admit it instead of sugarcoating the vernacular.

And trust me, I'm not enjoying myself very much! I'm just trying to eek out a modest existence. The internet is part of the modern, western world. You can look down on me for having internet access--but it don't mean a thing until you've walked a mile in my shoes. I dare ya!

I'm sure there are food banks around, but whether or not they are within distance, I don't know. I'll get through, I've no choice, a few days discomfort and I'll be eating again.

There are people far worse off than I. Why the hell we need food banks in developed western nations just goes to show how selfish our society really is. Some people are so selfish that they complain that someone else might get something free out of charity. I have always given charity, but find it hard to accept it. I hate seeing people struggle, and if I can help, I will do so, and to hell with what others think.

You do know that the preponderance of people on food stamps are children, the elderly, the disabled, the WORKING POOR. The elderly and disabled worked and paid taxes until they couldn't any longer. Children cannot by law be made to work, and the working poor pay their taxes every week just like you do.

WTF is wrong with you people?!

More than half of the SNAP beneficiaries are either disabled, children, or elderly. People abusing the system, fraud, and administrative errors have been reduce to below 4%. About 40% of those on SNAP actually work. I guess poor people in America are not entitled to the same quality of life as the rich or middle class?

Source

A family of 3 has to earn less than 25K per year to qualify for SNAP and their monthly bills must exceed an amount that brings their income to below 19K. One third of a persons pay goes towards food. Do you feel better funding a war or foreign aid rather than our own children and voters? Try living off of $1.50 to $4.50 per day to sustain yourself.

Source

There are about 47 million Americans on the SNAP program. What do you suggest? Starve those children, elderly, disabled, and working poor? Even communists feed their own people. People are getting older and more fat, expect to see more recipients in the future because of disability from being obese, and our overwhelmingly amount of elderly compared to the young.
