Hmm, that 3.5 happened after I went to bed. If this is anything like other smaller swarms at YS, that 3.5 should be the peak magnitude of all, and it should wind down from there. But still, notice that this is two separate swarms, occurring simultaneously:

It seems like it has been more active this week from Yellowstone down towards Mexico. I wonder why it seems to be going down that way. I don't think there is a fault line there. Maybe there is too much fracking going on down there lately

Here is a CRAZY conspiracy:

what if the fracking and the deepsea horizon blow out was just a big secret plan to releave yellowstones preasure into the gulf of mexico?

no need to debunk that with science. conspiracy theories require no such thing...

Is there anything we can actually do if Yellowstone blows though? I mean other than get to the shops first and buy enough food to keep us alive for a few months longer than everybody else?

It would depend where you live. All the sudden Mexico sounds lovely!

I've worked in Yellowstone a few times, once not long ago. Even after watching the last swarm very closely and learning as much as I could about the beast, gaining a healthy amount of respect and a bit of fear about it - Nothing drives the point home like sitting on top of it. I was a bit edgy to say the least despite the overwhelming beauty. At least I'm a few 100 miles away now, so I guess I'd have at least a few more minutes to live

Bloody hell - that thing is threatening!

I remember reading it has the potential to block out the sun from the entire planet due to the ash cloud.

3 days of darkness (more like 6 months) anyone?

OP you seem like the earthquake guy around here along with a few others. Is there a place you can point me to where I can learn more about Yellowstone and what you're all talking about? The extent of my knowledge on the subject is that if Yellowstone blows it's not going to be fun. I thought these swarms happened all the time, so which ones do you ignore and which get you excited?

Would you or have you ever done an earthquakes for dummies thread? You're awesome at compiling threads, and I think you'd do a great job laying it all out for people like me who notice their eyes glazing over when they hear about depth and frequency etc.

I am going to agree with Domo on this one, I live the other side of the state from New Madrid, but have never really followed the earthquake thing.

I am not an expert, but the YS swarms tend to be small quakes, when we start seeing 3.0 and above it can get people to take notice. So one aspect is the size of the quakes, don't like seeing 3.0 and above.

Tried and true method of volcanic mollification by the aboriginals for years... and it worked, too... until it didn't.

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Little Jackie paper loved that rascal puff,
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. oh

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on puffs gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whenever they came,
Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name. oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie paper came no more
And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave,
So puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. oh!

Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee.
