The Bank has issued paper banknotes ever since the central bank was created in 1694 as a way of raising money for King William III's war against France. The first fully printed notes appeared in 1853. Before that, notes were handwritten and signed by one of the bank's cashiers.

Polymer banknotes, as well as being hard to fake, are durable and stay cleaner for longer because the material is more resistant to dirt and moisture, the Bank said, adding feedback so far on the new-look notes had been positive.

The new type of money to be introduced in the UK will only be a few years away. However it does not matter what type of material is used for money, we all know by now the the economy game is rigged against the public.

In Canada, we have those notes. Our money looks more like monopoly money than ever!

Does this mean all the money-sniffing dogs will have to be re-trained? New polymer notes surely smell different to paper notes that have been in circulation for years.

We've had plastic notes down here for decades.

they pop out of your pocket and don't fold and are brilliant if you're skint and wandering around at 6am and find a bunch of floating notes stuck in the grass near a park.

Sorts out a great day when you think there's not much left to do now everyone is awake.

no, you get used to them. you have zero choice.
