Scientists from the UK, US and North Korea have joined forces to monitor the volcano responsible for one of the largest eruptions in history.

The volcano straddles the border between North Korea and China, and has been largely dormant since erupting a little over a thousand years ago.

Despite being at the top of the list of big eruptions, Mount Paektu remains obscure and enigmatic.

Details of the collaborative effort have been outlined in Science journal.

The international group of geologists has begun working on the volcano following a spate of recent earthquake activity that could indicate it is waking from slumber.

www.bbc.co.uk...

More often than not, recurring seismicity does not indicate an imminent eruption at a volcano. In this case, the size of the volcano is interesting and all, but what is perhaps more interesting is the level of cooperation- even if at gunpoint ( :shk: ) - between countries that are normally in a near state of war against each other. If only politicians had the resolve of scientists- we might all be able to actually live on this planet without killing each other.

Star & Flag for this powerfully insightful statement alone!

absolutely.

It is just a matter of being interested in studying the world around you, rather than interested in controlling the world around you.

This here is a prime example of how people can interact without the two major causes of war and destruction ---- money and religion.

Thank you for ending with a great point OP... and of course, volcanoes rock! >>> slight pun intended

That is a double-negative, no?
"More often than not...", "does not", would seem to me that "recurring seismicity" indicates imminence.

After a thousand years, this very large volcano wakens from a slumber...I think this is indeed important because there are a whole lot of volcanoes waking from slumbers these days, but let's all continue to ignore these facts!

So we just get used when they can't figure it out themselves yet we can't do anything else there? Whatever hope it helps relations with them...
