I have to admit i knew precious little about Australian politics and politicians. My 16yo daughter is very aware in this area though-and gave me a a lengthy "tutorial" on Tony Abbot just now.

My overall impression- Jesus wept.
How the hell did this guy get elected???

Because the alternative was a lot worse and he has big ears. He also provides us with a lot of humor whenever he gets his foot stuck in his mouth. He is so prone to this handicap that he buys his shoes in threes rather than in pairs. We like our humor and with no other viable candidate we chose the funny looking guy that makes us laugh.

Very easily - the Australian voters looked at the last 6 years governed by a incompetent labor government, and decided he was the much better choice. Also it was the worst vote for the incompetent labor government in over 100 years.

Translation: Everyone over 45 voted Liberal without knowing a damn thing about Liberals policies and simply voted because it said "Liberal" and not "Bloody Labor" - just like their forefathers taught them to do. Everyone else voted anything BUT Liberal but didn't have an understanding of how preferences work, and which party was throwing its preference which way, and accidentally ended up voting in Liberal.

Just to clear things up

Sounds pretty accurate to me !

I can only hope that this term of government ( time at the trough ), will create a new awareness

of the shifting dynamic. I don't see an Abbot govt. having the necessary subtleties.

The whole of parliament seems to be filled with galahs.

We need some wedge tailed eagles in there, they aren't in the current draught !

Ed: We also need a public education plan to educate as to how preferences do actually work.
The snorters spend zillions on electioneering.

Let the people know how it works ... it can't cost that much !

OI!! That's an insult to the poor, defenceless Galahs!

More like Seagulls, the rats of the High Seas.

Whilst the others are correct on the assessment on the previous leader Rupert Murdoch did lend a helping hand.

Tony Abbots bloopers are a lot funnier. Rudd's are more 'Jeez, really'

I prefer funny. Only thing funny about Rudd is he looks a lot like Mr Magoo.
