Dutch police have raided a Kurdish training camp in a small village in southern Netherlands. In all 29 people were arrested. Some confusion exists about the nature of the camp with some sources indicating it was a paramilitary training camp others calling it theoretical training. The camp is suspected to belong to the PKK also known as the KONGRA-GEL fought a 15 year war in Turkey before declaring a ceasefire in 1999. Over 36,000 people died in their attacks.

LIEMPDE, the Netherlands (AFP) - Dutch police raided a suspected Kurdish separatist training camp in a small village in the southern Netherlands, arresting 29 people, the national prosecutor's office said.

"In light of the investigation by the police and the national prosecutor's office into the PKK, a camp site was searched this morning in Liempde," its spokesman Wim de Bruin told AFP, referring to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party.

"Police arrested 29 people. The camp site is suspected to have been a PKK training camp," he added.

Early media reports had spoken of a "paramilitary" training camp, but this was downplayed by the local mayor, who said it was "theoretical" training.

"This morning ... the police searched for and found people suspected of activities which we cannot accept," Jan van Homelen, the mayor of Boxtel, of which Liempde is a part, said.

It is interesting to see if this was a truly separate action, or a bigger one with the crackdown imposed after the Van Gogh assassination. However, the Dutch authorities have been pretty vague about the charges being leveled against the jailed. Its pretty scary thought to see that these groups have such a world wide reach. We indeed may have such cells here in the U.S. Im not sure how you can crack down on all of them without trampling on our individual rights.

Very scary indeed when you take into account of the size of the US compared to a country llike Holland. tho I suspect even here in the UK there would be places hidden enough for this sort of training camp to be set up and viable.
