Russia is to send an anti-submarine ship and a missile cruiser to the Mediterranean, according to Russian news agency Interfax. An armed forces source has reportedly confirmed the planned deployment. Russia is strongly against any military intervention in Syria, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov believing it would seriously destabilise the region.

As far as i am aware, there are 2 ships being sent; one is an anti submarine and the other is a missile cruiser.

Im honestly not sure what to make of this; however i do think that it does increase the potential of this
esculating further.

Would this be a show of force or would they be using this to assist syria technically if it does kick off. I think its strange that we are supposed to have a sub there and they send a sub hunter!

I don't know what is giving them motivation to stand against these actions of the west.

Maybe they don't believe in WW# ending of the planet.

Maybe their weapons and military is to protect them against any attack.

Maybe they are not as evil as other superpowers on the planet.

Maybe they are not as evil as western MSM says.

I do agree to a certain extent and i certainly am not of the belief that Russia has asked for any of this. Its clear, well to me anyway, who the agressors in this conflict are.

Personally, i think that Russia have every right to send in a few ships, regardless of the reason; however, my views dont really matter, whats more important is to how this would be viewed by those involved in the conflict and its potential to increase tensions further.

Followiing this, personally I would like to see the UK take caution in their next step towards any military conflict. All this comes as David Cameron has dropped plans for a commons vote tonight. He has instead promised a second commons vote.

I wonder if this had any influence on that decision?

I must admit, that thought did cross my mind too. Personally i think the reason we havve delayed any action is because of the UN. To be seen to begin an attack without all of the full facts (the weapons inspectors reports) would make them look worse than they do at the moment.

Saying that though, i believe that they still have every intention of continuing down the same lines. I suspect that they already have a strong indication as to what the weapons inspectors reports are going to say and they will use this as further evidence to support their intended actions.

Honestly guys, at first I was really thinking it might get to something. But WW3 is not gonna happen ( atleast now ).

At this point America is losing its allies; Obama doesn't have to support of the people nor the congress. The UN aside.

I hope i'm not wrong, but this will end with a fizzle instead of a bang. e

Russia has already moved the repair ship and personnel out of the Tartus Naval Base.

MOSCOW, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Russia is preparing to withdraw personnel from its naval maintenance and supply facility on Syria's Mediterranean coast, Interfax news agency reported on Wednesday.

If accurate, the plan would reflect safety concerns as the United States and its allies gear up for a probable strike to punish President Bashar al-Assad for an alleged gas attack his foes say killed hundreds of people.

The modestly staffed and equipped facility in the port of Tartous is Russia's sole military base outside the former Soviet Union, serving as a foothold in Syria and helping it keep warships travelling through the Eastern Mediterranean supplied.

Citing an unnamed source in the Russian navy headquarters, Interfax reported that the facility's personnel had boarded the repair vessel stationed there and that Russian warships would escort it out.

The report did not say when the vessel would leave Tartous or how many people were aboard. The Defence Ministry declined to comment, saying questions should be addressed to the navy. Navy officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

This ties in with the Morse Code weather transmission that the repair ship transmits on a daily basis. I can pick up these transmission here in the UK.

Since the 17th August the Amur Class Repair Ship PM-138 has been anchored off the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in international waters.

From the Morse Code on the 27th August on 8345 Kilohertz. RCV is HQ Black Sea Fleet Sevastopol and RBIZ is the repair ship.

Neither do I, well not a WWIII in the nuclear sense anyway.

I do however think that no good can come of this and that as tensions are already high at the moment, moves like this can only make the situation worse.

This will be the Cruiser Moskva and Destroyer Kulakov returning from the Caribean and Latin American good will tour. Moskva has to return to the Mediterranean as she is Black Sea Fleet.

MEXICO, August 27 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian naval task force, led by the Moskva missile cruiser, arrived Monday on a visit to the Venezuelan port of La Guaira, local media reported.

The Moskva, the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, is accompanied by Udaloy-class destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov from the Northern Fleet and the Ivan Bubnov tanker.

During the visit, which will last until August 29, the crews of the Russian warships are expected to meet with their Venezuelan colleagues and bestow honors to former President Hugo Chavez, who died of cancer on March 5.

Before the visit to Venezuela, the naval task force stopped at the ports of Cuba and Nicaragua. After August 29, the warships are scheduled to visit Spain and Portugal.

Russia said they were going to 'stay out of it' - or so said another thread here on ATS...
All we can do is hope they stick to their guns. (/sarcasm)

It's my opinion there's no way 'out' of the current world wide financial crisis - than war. Meaning - regardless if Obama has support or not, allies or not? War is coming. Now? I don’t know. When? Inevitable. IMHO.

I hope I'm wrong.

peace

"A large anti-submarine ship of the Northern Fleet will join them (the existing naval forces) over the next few days.
"Later it will be joined by the Moskva, a rocket cruiser of the Black Sea Fleet which is now wrapping up its tasks in the northern Atlantic and will soon begin a Transatlantic voyage towards the Strait of Gibraltar."

Of course it won't end up in ww3. And you are quite right, nothing will happen.

Nothing ever happens!

Not sure why theyre doing it.

But it seems that the world was a better place when there was a "balance of power".

Wonder what this gesture really means. 2 ships arent enough to stop an attack, not even really enough to discourage.

Now, if they had sent 20 ships...

Maybe Russians knew this gesture of west in invading Syria is not going to make another war but they are being cautious ,too. So they send two Ships.

BTW , they maybe know better about the movement of the US military and the statistics. So they knew that nothing major is going to happen.

Maybe they think Syria doesn't worth more than two ships ?

Further to this story 6 RAF Typhoon Jets have been deployed to Cyprus to "Protect UK interests and sovereign bases at a time of heightened tension in the wider region".

However it goes on to say "The Jets are being sent to Akrotiri in Cyprus today as a prudent and precautionary measure, and are not deploying to take part in military action against Syria".

Comments made by the Ministry of Defence.

The way out of this financial crisis is to balance the budget, state debt will lower over time while the economy grows, no war is needed for that but the will to get the house in order.

The more i think about this the more it starts to seem that this could be a move to enable them to be in a position to provide technical support if needed.

I think at some point Russia did state that they have no intention of going to war; however the Russian foreign minister did say yesterday that they may provide technical support to Syria if an attack took place.

It cant just be coincidence that its a sub hunter can it?

A "modern" frigate, is worth at least 2 destroyers, and we without a doubt have at least one sub supporting these 4 destroyers, that is a "gimme".

I think Obama may well strike before the G20 summit to send a "strong" message to Russia, as strength is one of the only things they acknowledge or respect, which is why they are sending an antisub ship, and just less than necessary frigate to counter our destroyers.

They know they cant counter our Navy, it is just too big, and too capable, but they can rattle their sabers, which is exactly what this is about.

WW3.....over Seria?!!!!!!........kinda reminds me of what happened after a small time "Archduke" Furdinand was assassinated in the earlt 1900's.....hopefully I am wrong.
