They aren't unmarked, you just couldn't see the markings. Even so called "unmarked military helicopters" are marked, they're just marked in low visibility paint to make it harder to see the markings.

Once the helicopters joined in the C-130s had to take farther spacing for safety. Since the helicopters are much slower, and harder to see, they took the Hercs farther out to give them more time to see the helos as they were coming in to the runway. It's a safety thing.
