5-year-old in custody after gun fired in school cafeteria

Wow, how mental is this!

A 5-year-old brought the gun to Westside Elementary School in his backpack and it discharged in the cafeteria. Nobody was injured.

How does a 5 year old kid get hold of a loaded firearm that has the safety off? Mental, im dumbfounded, amazed, shocked. The parents should be prosecuted

That was a toy gun that you buy at the dollar store with caps that make loud popping sounds. Apparently even those are considered leathal weapons these days.

How have we survived as a species this long....??? It's amazing....thank goodness nobody was injured...that could have been so horrific and this would have ramped up the gun control law debate (for about a month)..

Whatttttttttttttt??????? The people couldn't break the news that it was a toy gun two minutes after it happened? I would love to know when the media found out about it and sat on this bit of information...

I watched the whole video and searched for articles explaining it was a toy gun but so far have found nothing.

Could you please link to where you read it was a toy pop gun?

That would just be crazy! But I'd like to read about it myself.

ETA: I'm still looking and am not finding it. Only references I found about a five year old being detained for a toy cap gun is an older and unrelated incident.

I have a 357 desert eagle, I bought that gun so my daughter or her friends couldn't chamber a shell. My nephew at the time was 13 and he couldn't even chamber it. I figured that was a good safety feature.

My daughter is 29 years old now, and she still can't chamber it My wife can't chamber it either I told my wife before that if someone broke in to fire the gun at the ceiling over the person and the ceiling would probably fall down on them. She remembered differently, she remembers it that I told her to throw the gun at the person to knock them out. Strange, if she did that they would have a gun. Maybe they would pick it up and take off though, since they got a good prize already, as long as the clip wasn't in it it may be a good false memory..

I'd never leave a chambered bullet in a gun if there was any chance of kids getting ahold of it.

More proof that people shouldn't have guns- they are much more likely to cause harm than good.

Gun Safety 101-Lock Them Up Around Children

If you feel the need to retain a loaded weapon for home security, keep them safe from children. Difficult safety switches and difficult loading is appropriate. Teach gun safety.

Dad had a gun collection. I knew how to disassemble, clean and reassemble anything before I was allowed to shoot one. I was 5. If course, in appropriate gun management then resulted in a beating, that frankly, was a good idea.

Felony charges to 'responsible' person. Jail Time. No questions.

If you dont want kids getting their hands on things they shouldnt have then dont have kids.

I live in Memphis. Just heard about this at work, I must admit, I was slightly surprised until someone said "Frayser".

Any local here will tell you that nothing is a surprise if it happens in Frayser. That's like the Compton of Memphis, and Memphis is like the Compton of the world, so you can imagine how ghetto it really is.

Kids don't break locks, if they are scared of the repercussions. I never did. I knew I would get the belt. Plus, most 5 year olds don't have the attention span, let alone the ability to break a lock.


Has anyone found anything yet that mentions this being only a toy gun? If it was a real gun, the parents most definitely should be charged.

Actually it proves nothing. Because one person does something wrong does not equal everyone doing something wrong. It also does nothing to prove that guns do more harm than good.

What it does prove is that you can't think logically and are prone to using emotional arguments.

How do we know if the 'parents' even had guns at home ?

How do we know the kid even knew about the gun ?

How do we know whether or not somebody planted the gun ?

How do we know that somebody from a gang didn't give the kid the gun ?

How do we know this wasn't some feeble attempt to discredit somebody at the school ?
