#1 It is estimated that there are 1,331 used nuclear fuel rods that need to be removed from Fukushima. Because of all of the damage that has taken place, computer-guided removal of the rods will not be possible. Manual removal is much riskier, and it is absolutely essential that the removal of each of the 1,331 rods goes perfectly because a single mistake could potentially lead to a nuclear chain reaction.

#2 According to Reuters, the combined amount of cesium-137 contained in those nuclear fuel rods is 14,000 times greater than what was released when the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima at the end of World War II. Other estimates put this number far higher.

#3 Officials in Japan admit that 300 tons of radioactive water from Fukushima is entering the Pacific Ocean every 24 hours.

#4 According to a professor at Tokyo University, 3 gigabecquerels of cesium-137 are flowing into the port at Fukushima Daiichi every single day…

I don't know what to make of all this, im to ignorant about nuclear science to understand. How bad is this really? Is it coincidence the timing that this happened with? Ie, the date, close enough to 2012, i know i know.

#5 According to Tepco, a total of somewhere between 20 trillion and 40 trillion becquerels of radioactive tritium have gotten into the Pacific Ocean since the Fukushima disaster first began.

That seems scary but i'm not 100% sure how to quantify that in a way that i understand. Well ATS, where are we at on the Japan issue, it seems like we are split.

Anyway enjoy the doom porn.

Im not expert by any stretch of the imagination. With that said, its BAD.

There is so much nuclear material from reactors that with into a meltdown, and from the spent fuel pools.

Their protective lining does nothing to stop the water that's cooling the pile of radioactive debris from entering the ground and leaching off into the oceans.

There is a serious chance that the nuclear material and contaminated water could sink far enough into the ground that it would contaminate the Tokyo aquifer.

I believe that japan is uninhabitable at this point. This release of radioactive material was hundreds of times greater then Chernobyl. Its been almost 28 years since that incident, and no one lives anywhere near that disaster zone.

Its truly a disaster of epic proportions, maybe even biblical.

Who knows, maybe im nuts and this is a godsend. Maybe in a few years we will all grow wings?

Maybe this is the reason behind obama's immigration reform? Maybe a flood of Japanese refugees incoming in a few months?

I have tried to wade through that thread, but its too deep for me. I keep making threads and posting in others on the status of the Fukushima disaster.

Of course it's deep, the thread has been on-going since the disaster in Fukushima began. Beyond the answers to many basic questions it also contains pictures, videos, graphs and insights into this event that go well above what is being stated on most news sites.

My problems is that all the good bits are strewn around. A thread that long needs to be cleaned up. There are too many people asking questions and speaking their mind that the important info gets pushed to the back.

I guess im just not a fan of threads that go on for hundreds of pages.

Russia should be helping them clean up, after all they have the experience when it comes to this kind of disaster.

The sad reality is that there is no known fix for this. Not a single brilliant human has an answer. Much less those idiots at Tepco. When this first happened I said that this was an ELE event. I stand by that assertion. Even those that think it is better in the Southern Hemisphere are sadly wrong. The bio-accumulation taking place in the seafood and other foods transported around the world will cause a cancer spike like nothing ever seen.

What do 90% of old people die from these days? Cancer. That is a left over gift from the all Nuclear weapons tests. No immediate effect means it will be ignored. Besides there is NOTHING we can do but sit back and wonder just how bad it can get. Welcome to the greatest Nuclear experiment ever.

No point in hiding, moving or watching what you eat. You can't hide from this one folks.

except this time, its not porn, it's real and it will effect
all of us.

The only question is how fast it effects us, if they dont cause
the rods to explode, then it will be short and sweet, , if they remove
them without any further incidents (which i doubt given their track record)
then it will be a slow die off.

Think of history where civilization as a whole hit a bottle neck and
very few were around, then the population exploded again...

that is what we are ultimately looking at. I dont think the general
population has grasped just exactly what we are facing.

imo, take your worst doom porn and combine it all together and then
multiply it by 10. That is the cold reality of our future.

Today a alert was issued for a radioactive cloud over the west coast
of the U.S. It is just a matter of time before this becomes more common
and it's effects start showing up in the medical fields.

Well, for me the most disturbing thing i have noticed so far isn't what the news has stated it is what a legendary film maker named Akira Kurosawa dreamed and later put into his movie Akira Kurosawa's Dreams

A large nuclear power plant near Mount Fuji has begun to melt down; its six reactors explode one by one. The breaches fill the sky with hellish red fumes and send millions of Japanese citizens fleeing in terror towards the ocean. After an unspecified amount of time, two men, a woman, and her two small children are seen alone, left behind on land in broad daylight. Behind them is the sea. The older man, who is dressed in a business suit, explains to the younger man that the rest have drowned themselves in the ocean. He then says that the several colours of the clouds billowing across the now rubbish-strewn, post-apocalyptic landscape signify different radioactive isotopes; according to him, red signifies plutonium-239, a tenth of a microgram of which is enough to cause cancer. He elaborates on how other released isotopes cause leukemia (strontium-90) and birth defects (cesium-137) before wondering at the foolish futility of colour-coding radioactive gases of such lethality.
The woman, hearing these descriptions, recoils in horror before angrily cursing those responsible and the pre-disaster assurances of safety they had given. The suited man then displays contrition, suggesting that he is in part responsible for the disaster. The other man, dressed casually, watches the multicoloured radioactive clouds advance upon them. When he turns back towards the others at the shore, he sees the woman weeping: the suit-clad man has leaped to his death. A cloud of red dust reaches them, causing the mother to shrink back in terror. The remaining man attempts to shield the mother and her children by using his jacket to feebly fan away the now-incessant radioactive billows.

Sound familiar?

While an awful situation, it isnt helped with bogus sensationalism like this.
What they're actually talking about is a meltdown or fire, which is bad enough in itself, but its worded to mislead the reader into thinking EXPLODING BOMB.

As evidenced by the reply:

Good grief, isnt the plain truth bad enough?

They have tried to send cameras down there but they failed. They have no idea how much fuel is even intact at this point. Three of the reactors went into meltdown state. Not to mention all the spent fuel lying around.

They have no idea where the fuel even is in the remnants of the buildings.

Its a total loss. At this point its all about keeping the mess cool so it dont ignite again.

I feel sorry for anyone living in Japan. That whole area has to be saturated with radiation.

I bet they dont even have potable water at this point. Its leaking into the oceans so its certainly in their fresh water as well.

TEPCO and the Japanese government won't let anyone help. They have been so stubborn since day one they may screw all of us.

With almost no coverage by the MSM most people have no idea this is going on. The scale only goes to 7, with 7 being Chernobyl. This is, oh, I dunno, say a 20, give or take.

Really, take the time and read that big thread here. It took me nearly forever but has really great info in it. It's worth the time.

Fukushima is the end of the world - that's how bad it is.

We can see the fish dying in the Pacific now - it will be completely dead in 5 years. Combine that with the ongoing BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Follow the jet stream - Follow the ocean currents.

If TPTB had any kind of responsible bone in their bodies - they would be figuring out how to shut down and neutralize the remaining nuclear power plants before this happens again. Almost all of them are on water ways - they have to be to "cool" the runoff.

ELE.

Everyone should get themselves sterilized now - you don't want to have babies and watch them die slowly because of this man-made disaster.

And that a@# hole obama is trying to sell his idiot "global warming tax". Kiss my A%^.

Maybe its too melodramatic.....were all screwed.

We haven't begun to see the true repercussions of this and wont for many years.

for some reason we here in the us and probably most countries other than japan we act as though there's some enormous coffee filter keeping back all the radioactive waste posing no threat to anyone except japan.. it's the only thing i can think of that allows any discussion about the topic without completely freaking out.

this is horrifying and doesn't seem like anyone is doing anything, not that there's actually anything anyone can do but still.. it just seems like everyone is approaching the issue so lackadaisical. anyway.. we're screwed. so i guess that's probably a reason?

The current background radiation in Tokyo is 0.2 microSv/hr. This is quite a low level. One would need to live for 120 years to be exposed to one Sievert dose total (this could cause sickness if received over a short time frame, but not over years.)
wattsupwiththat.com...

How much continues to leak into the Pacific Ocean over the next 20 years is just guesses. At Chernobyl, the radioactive dust settled on the surface of the land--just fractions of an inch in depth. A larger quantity of radioactive pollutants at Fukushima will enter the ocean that is miles deep.

I know it isn't your title, but "holocaust"? Tragedy or even calamity would have served better but holocaust? Does the author even know what that name means or did they believe it will draw in readers? Me thinks the later.

Is the situation there bad? Yep. Is it killing millions by fire or nuclear means? Not that we know yet.

If the oceans are instrumental in the ecosystem functioning then am i to assume that by killing off whats in the ocean, we all die? I have hear it time and time again, without sea life the food chain would be seriously effected.
