David Miranda, schedule 7 and the danger that all reporters now face

www.theguardian.com

A little over two months ago I was contacted by a very senior government official claiming to represent the views of the prime minister. There followed two meetings in which he demanded the return or destruction of all the material we were working on. The tone was steely, if cordial, but there was an implicit threat that others within government and Whitehall favoured a far more draconian approach.

Now apologies if you're in any way bored with this, but I think it's extremely important. As we learn more about Glenn Greenwald's partner getting detained, www.abovetopsecret.com... he's spoken about some events surrounding his run-ins with various government officials, leading on from the above paragraph:

"The mood toughened just over a month ago, when I received a phone call from the centre of government telling me: "You've had your fun. Now we want the stuff back." There followed further meetings with shadowy Whitehall figures. The demand was the same: hand the Snowden material back or destroy it. I explained that we could not research and report on this subject if we complied with this request. The man from Whitehall looked mystified. "You've had your debate. There's no need to write any more."."

Here's the bits I hope will raise the debate:

"The state that is building such a formidable apparatus of surveillance will do its best to prevent journalists from reporting on it. Most journalists can see that. But I wonder how many have truly understood the absolute threat to journalism implicit in the idea of total surveillance, when or if it comes – and, increasingly, it looks like "when"."

"We are not there yet, but it may not be long before it will be impossible for journalists to have confidential sources. Most reporting – indeed, most human life in 2013 – leaves too much of a digital fingerprint. Those colleagues who denigrate Snowden or say reporters should trust the state to know best (many of them in the UK, oddly, on the right) may one day have a cruel awakening. One day it will be their reporting, their cause, under attack. But at least reporters now know to stay away from Heathrow transit lounges."

Personally I think he has a point, and it's scary to think that one day our news may be completely government controlled, I'll leave you with this:

"with two GCHQ security experts overseeing the destruction of hard drives in the Guardian's basement just to make sure there was nothing in the mangled bits of metal which could possibly be of any interest to passing Chinese agents. "We can call off the black helicopters," joked one as we swept up the remains of a MacBook Pro."

And just as I post this, Twitter from Wikileaks:

Guardian #Snowden hard drive shred makes it clear why it is necessary for WikiLeaks to distribute insurance files www.facebook.com...

Grab the files

So we have high level encrypted files, Wikileaks has the key and will presumably release it, if anything happens to the organization. I sure do hope we have some Alien/UFO stuff in here

This chain of events is near identical to the moves made by Nazi Germany prior to WW2.

The parallels are stark and obvious!

First one group and then another were targeted and the news was so easily controlled that the people cheered the Third Reich, well, for a while anyway, until the bombs started falling on their heads.

By then it was too late. Hitler had them all sown up. Between the SS and the Gestapo there was very little room to speak out.

When it is too late ......... it's too late.

If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed;
If you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly;
You may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival.
There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.

Wise words and if Wkileaks is genuine, which I think it is, then it's good to know that they won't go out without an explosive finale

Hell, when you read someone talking about real democracy in action, then I think Wiki should just release the key now.

It is true, and I think people are underestimating the threat. I think it is more than coincidental that the events are similar to the way the Nazis happened, I think that we might actually be dealing with real Nazis.

Like legitimate Nazi sleeper cells that are seriously, 100%, Nazi.

What I mean is, there is more than a passing Nazi signature in the current political climate. We have our security forces named "Homeland Security" (of German origin), and there is mounting pressure to take out the bankers (Jews),

and after the attack on the Twin Towers, there were a lot of conspiracies "leaked" that pointed to Israel being behind the attacks. Meanwhile, Obama seems to be supporting radical Muslim regimes in the Middle-East, and religion is painted as being bad...

While simultaneously, there is a new Master Race being developed, it is the perfect liberal atheist, justifying their existence through power.

Just my thoughts. Plus Homeland Security? That to me almost shouts "Hey! Look over here! I'm a Nazi!

And in case people didn't know it already, Nazis (like legitimate Nazis) are extremely evil, and extremely non-forgiving people, I mean you don't even have to do anything wrong, they just automatically are not forgiving, like, to the point where they kill people who are not perfect,

it is like a permanent state of non-forgiveness. They are extremely dangerous. If we are dealing with some Nazi sleeper cells here that is not good.

This is nazi all the way

And so one of the more bizarre moments in the Guardian's long history occurred – with two GCHQ security experts overseeing the destruction of hard drives in the Guardian's basement just to make sure there was nothing in the mangled bits of metal which could possibly be of any interest to passing Chinese agents. "We can call off the black helicopters," joked one as we swept up the remains of a MacBook Pro. Whitehall was satisfied, but it felt like a peculiarly pointless piece of symbolism that understood nothing about the digital age. We will continue to do patient, painstaking reporting on the Snowden documents, we just won't do it in London. The seizure of Miranda's laptop, phones, hard drives and camera will similarly have no effect on Greenwald's work.

This thread has what I would like to call perfect timing. Tuesday Aug. 20th, Al Jazeera America comes into the MSM scene. They have large sums of capital and will not need to rely on corporate sponsors. Plus they will not have the motivation to be bought out by the CIA. Their primary intention is to report not only unbiased news, but the news the other MSM doesn't.

This here could actually be the salvation of the US, and could very well end up being our #1 news station if they play their cards right.

Oh and on yahoo they are reporting that there was an exchange of info in Berlin. And Miranda gave Poitras his data and she gave him some even fresher goods. This was because reporting has to be done out of the UK now.

Godwin - you fail.

And no it isn't - the Nazi's actually co-opted the population first.

You fail , this is similar to Gestapo

David Miranda: 'They said I would be put in jail if I didn't co-operate'

Miranda said the authorities in the UK had pandered to the US in trying to intimidate him and force him to reveal the passwords to his computer and mobile phone.

"They were threatening me all the time and saying I would be put in jail if I didn't co-operate," said Miranda. "They treated me like I was a criminal or someone about to attack the UK … It was exhausting and frustrating, but I knew I wasn't doing anything wrong."

"I was in a different country with different laws, in a room with seven agents coming and going who kept asking me questions. I thought anything could happen. I thought I might be detained for a very long time," he said.
