The fight now is for the other 14. The Coast Guard wants all of them to refit three air stations, but the Forest Service wants a couple too.

That's what the article says. The firefighting fleet is getting long in the tooth. This could give them a breather, so to speak. Same for the Coasties.

As for the Air Force juggling funds, I was stationed at Bragg for a decade. The USAF woulds always upgrade housing, the Golf Course, etc, at Pope and then when they ran out of money they would scream bloody murder that the runways needed to be repaired. What a scam. I was the Air Ops NCO for my brigade for a couple of years and seen it first hand. You can't jump out of aircraft if those aircraft can't take off.

The CG deal appears to be based on getting all 14. So we'll see what happens.

The final deal has apparently been finished. The Coast Guard will take all of the Spartans, and in return will turn over two C-130s to the Forest Service.

The CG and forest service will get them for very little if any money as surplus.

For the CG and forest service this is a way to stay in budget.

Its almost like it was set up for them to get around budget restriction.
