Toronto police officer charged with second degree murder in streetcar shooting death of Sammy Yatim

“The Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ian Scott, has reasonable grounds to believe that a Toronto Police Service (TPS) officer committed a criminal offence in relation to the shooting death of 18-year-old Sammy Adib Yatim in July of 2013,” said the press release.

Mr. Yatim was fired at nine times by police after witnesses reported that he brandished a three-inch knife on the westbound Dundas streetcar near Trinity Bellwoods Park. The incident occurred around midnight on July 27. There was no one else on the streetcar with Mr. Yatim, as all the passengers and the driver

Although the officer has not yet been arrested, the charges are for second degree murder, not manslaughter.

This is not the final word for sure, but now that the wheels of justice have begun to roll, everyone involved, both the shooter and Sammy's family will have their day in court, which is what Canadians have been calling for.

Canadians have been increasing outspoken and outraged about what we perceive to be rising incidents of police violence.

Although sad for everyone involved, let the truth and facts now come out, because no doubt there could be more to this situation that was caught on video.
