Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen
While it's comforting to know that he distanced himself from Fatah's terrorist activities, soon after it's founding, and is considered a moderate,
some of his past statements have been highly inflammatory. Among them, stating (and never retracting) an assertion that the Jews have exaggerated the
number killed in the holocaust, and even asserted that some Jewish leaders conspired with Hitler, in some of his college papers.
Still, I think he represents a much greater chance for peace than Arafat, if he can successfully influence the militants to participate in a peace
process. That seems to be the key issue.
