A manifesto posted yesterday on the Internet in behalf of the Peoples Republic of Coastopia was couched in language that sent Stonewall Jackson rollicking in laughter, in the way that stern Presbyterian elders rollick in paradise: "We are tired of rednecks in Oklahoma picking the leader who will determine if it is safe for us to cross the Brooklyn Bridge. We are sick of homophobic knuckle-draggers in Wyoming contributing to the national debate on our gay marriages. So we have done the only thing we could. We seceded." ~ Exerpted from a post on WWW. Hillary.com

Okay, sure it's funny, but think about it. A LOT of Democrats are totally P.O.ed that Kerry lost. More than that, they're confused and bewildered as to WHY they lost. This was to be their "slam dunk" election.

(Very much like the Bush-Gore election was also a "slam dunk" for the Democrats.)

Of course they're depressed, but is that a reason to consider seceding from the Union?

What do you think?

Though I take this with a grain of salt because its pretty funny IMHO. But I live in a Blue state and would fight anyone that tried to split the USA up. I could never let all the people that died in the Civil War have their deaths be invain for something as stupid as Kerry not getting elected.

I live in a blue state, and was wondering if the blue states will honor red state passports? The biggest problem with succession is what do you do with the military? who get's what? what about businesses? better yet, what will the blue states do for income? are they going to tax themselves to death so that they can have socialised medicine. I hereby apply for the consulate position in the blue state of Maryland from the red state of Georgia.

I think the blue counties should secede. They can take their urban ghettos with them. All together they may take up the total land mass of Michigan. Why force an entire state to secede when a \ only one or two densely packed urban areas are blue?

A humorous take on a New York City secession fantasy was written before the Republican Convention, not surprisingly, in New York Magazine (see link below). While it is only a fantasy and satire, it brings up the core of why New Yorkers feel that they are different from than the rest of the country.

There is a great deal of resentment as our tax revenues subsidize a great deal of the nation, yet we have a disproportionate say in national politics. Everybody dumps on New Yorkers until it comes time to fund federal programs. If the red states don't want to be associated with the "urban ghettos" of New York City, then stop taking our money.

Blue states like California and New York provide the largest tax revenues to the federal government. Perhaps we should pack up our wallets and go (along with our Sodom & Gomorrah-like lifestyles and liberal ideologies)--but who is going to pay the red states allowance if we do?

Hmm...maybe you could work out a "Tax Dollars for Food" program. Not a lot of wheat grown in Central Park, you know.

This is stupid.

It was not like the Blue states 100% voted for Kerry and Red 100% voted for Bush.

There were tons of states that where very close to going either way. Ohio ..... iowa ....... and many others.

People blow things out of proportion. This is quite funny.

Ummm.. what exactly does New York City PRODUCE. Yes the city hosts a lot of our financial activity, but that can be changed pretty easily. You port? Well yes but LA and Houston are much more vital.

New York City grows no food, mines no minerals, has very few manufacturing centers. You do a lot of shipping but so do other ports (and they do more of it). In other words, your city seems to be devoid of any PHYSICAL production capabilities...

So other than playing with money, what exactly does NYC contribute?

For example: The dollar collapses, trade levels reach new lows and no one is investing in stocks anymore. (This might be closer than you realize) What would your city contribute to the rest of the country? Crime? Obnoxious social values?

Amen, MrNice and ShadowXIX... both of you have perfectly expressed my feelings on the matter.

I would gladly take up arms against anybody that dared desecrate the memory of the men who died in defense of this nation against the short-sighted secessionists the first time around. The United States of America possesses a unique greatness that goes far beyond politics, and I will gladly fight and die in its defense if such an insurrection should occur.

There are not any Blue states only Blue Counties. Better wait to see the "county" maps before anyone tries to run away.

So the Republican definition of a "Mandate" is ignoring the people and counting acreage. "Democracy" at it's most bizarre.

Here's the closest this President will ever get to a Man Date.

I'm pretty sure Bush is 51% gay too.

You are advocating killing your own countrymen if they were to peacefully secede (you do know that it was peaceful, don't you...until Lincoln, rightly or wrongly, used the military to FORCE the seceding states to re-unite?)
So...you're a patriot if you kill Americans? Gee, first you just had to kill those non-important and non-life worthy citizens of Iraq...this certainly raises the bar on the definition of "Patriotic".

Kill Americans to protect the memory of Civil War veterans? That's crap.

Really want to protect their memory...learn to deal with conflicts peacefully.

This "Civil War II" is also crap. Part of the design. You are either part of it or allowing yourself to be duped. A fraction of persons in this country control the military and are controlling you and others like you. THEY, and only THEY, want "Civil War II" (THEY=those in control, not the entire Military.)
Learn to think for yourself.

If any violence happens...it will be because it was orchestrated by the same sub-humans that rigged the election. (Maybe Bush did win, maybe he didn't. BUT THE ELECTION WAS RIFE WITH FRAUD...so we don't know who the people voted for.)

I am clear-headed and open-eyed...and know indeed that "the pen is mightier than the sword."

BTW, NYC was voted the safest city this year, so I wouldn't say that we are contributing much crime. Obnoxious social values are a matter of opinion--but that really gets the heart of the issue, doesn't it?

The 8 million people that live in NYC are maligned on a regular basis--we are all immoral perverts with who take drugs, kill babies and steal, right? I see the tourists in Times Square in their elastic waist pants and white sneakers clutching at their handbags and Gap shopping bags for dear life when then walk through the crowd (of other tourists, I might add), lining up to squeeze into the Red Lobster or Olive Garden because they don't want to eat any of that "weird" foreign food that we New Yorkers eat. I don't know why they come here in the first place if all they are going to do is shop in stores and eat in restaurants that they have back home at their local mall. I have seen them point, stare, and laugh at cab drivers wearing turbans, Hasidic Jews wearing their payos and beards, same-sex couples, homeless people, and others who don't buy their wardrobe at Eddie Bauer. I'd say that kind of intolerance is pretty obnoxious.

Anyhow, I digress. Obviously NYC isn't rife with farmland. But it's not like the groceries filling the shelves of the local Food Emporium are donated or government surplus--many farmers and ranchers in other parts of the country depend on selling stuff to the millions of mouths to feed in New York to keep their businesses going.

But no state is self sufficient. And so what if New York doesn't grow wheat (most of the U.S. is doing low-carb anyway)---New York is supporting many of the homeland security programs, educational systems, infrastructure and public works in other states--isn't THAT enough of a contribution?

This assertion that New Yorkers just "play with money" is off-base. You can't discount the value of the taxes that New York pays to the federal government. A weak dollar, economic downturns and stock market crashes have happened before and those events have had no impact on New York's share of total federal tax revenues. Everybody suffers when the country is in an economic downturn or in recession--why? Lack of money flow--not lack of grain. Take away the cash that New York gives to the federal government and there is a serious hole in the budget. Add California and the country is in deep trouble.

So the comment made earlier about the blue states taking their urban ghettos and leaving the U.S.-- while it would rid the rest of the nation of many liberals and the associated obnoxious social values, would have a serious financial impact. Not that anyone seems to care, but do you see where blue state resentment comes from? It is a bit frustrating being a donor state and then being called a criminal and obnoxious as payback. We are told that our values are wrong, but our money is still green.

I don't think that I need to review New York's contribution to the United States. I think that having the financial and cultural capital of the world within the borders of the United States is something that you can't even put a price on, nor something you would want to ever give up. Derride New York all you want, but you would be hard-pressed to find another city that could be considered more valuable.

They are also the biggest drain on federal revenues.

In NY, almost 2.8M people voted for Bush (40%).
In CA., almost 5M people voted for Bush (nearly 45%).

That's a lot of votes for states that are traditionally Democrat.

There you have it!!
New York is obviously extremely important in this respect, judging by the rest of the country. Crime and obnxiousness no know bounds. Meth labs and bigots in the rural areas, crack houses and rude latte-suckers in the city. So New York's main exports are reaching every corner of america, and making huge inroads in overseas markets, judging by news headlines. Some people, Osama for instance, even manage to combine the two.
