FORT HOOD, Texas (Reuters) - Accused Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan said on Tuesday that war is an ugly thing with death and devastation on both sides, in a brief opening statement at his long-awaited trial for opening fire at a Texas base in 2009 and killing 13 U.S. soldiers.

Hasan, who was paralyzed from the chest down and is confined to a wheelchair after being shot by Fort Hood base police who ended his rampage, is representing himself at the court-martial.

"Witnesses will testify that war is an ugly thing. Death, destruction and devastation are felt from both sides, from friend and foe. Evidence from this trial will only show one side. I was on the wrong side but I switched sides,"

Hasan, an American-born Muslim, said in a roughly two minute-long opening statement.

The Army psychiatrist behind the shooting rampage at Fort Hood nearly four years ago called himself a "mujahideen" in a short and unrepentant opening statement at his military trial, which will likely feature the bizarre spectacle of him questioning his own victims.
Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who is serving as his own attorney, began his court martial with an opening statement less than two minutes long and didn't bother to cross-examine any of the early witnesses as the military trial began under heavy security at the Texas base.
He faces the death penalty for the Nov. 5, 2009 rampage, in which 13 people were killed and where witnesses said Hasan yelled "Alahu Akhbar!" as he sprayed gunfire at unarmed fellow soldiers.

I hope he gets just punishment, he killed innocents in cold blood, and those that have survived are still suffering, while this scumbag STILL gets paid

Can the Obama Administration call it a hate crime already?

Maybe those people that were shot by this 'warrior' can have a Purple Heart and combat pay now also?

unfortunately, its still listed as workplace violence, which is why those injured are still suffering and struggling to pay for medical bills as a result of this dirtbag

I don't know how they can argue the point now, with the shooter referring to it as 'war'.

This "Human" piece of filth is the absolute worst kind of offal that the human race produces.
Anyone who would turn on, and attack his brother-in-arms is totally despicable.
He needs to be convicted of capital murder, then parachuted out of a C-130 in the middle
of the Sahara Desert.. wheelchair and all. He's just breathing good air.
