TV Game show gives away Babies

A game show host in Pakistan has defended his decision to give away abandoned babies to childless couples live on TV.

Aamir Liaquat Hussain, who has handed out two baby girls so far, denied the giveaways were a publicity stunt.

He claimed the babies would have been "eaten by cats or dogs" had they not been discovered by the show.

"It's not like parents (appear during) the show and (we) deliver the baby like a prize," he said.

"We're trying to create an environment ... for those people who are needy and want to adopt babies.

"It's not commercialisation, it's not showbiz. It's real Islam. Where are the actors? Where are actresses? I have not seen any actors or actresses here."

Scouring garbage dumps for discarded babies??

This is in Pakistan? What a prize!!! I'm distressed but in a semi-good way?

In one hand, I could never imagine discarding a baby in the garbage (though it happens a lot in Chicago, I can cound 2-3 times this year I heard a story like that)

In the other I feel it's a "good" idea, and good for this man. Some couples try and try they might never conceive a child.

In the middle, I hope that the families receiving the child, love and cheerish the life they are given to mold in this chaotic hot mess of a world.

yeah it is just awful I think! Imagine growing up to find out your parents had won you on a game show, nuts!

awwww ... a cute little pakistani baby! I'd love it! Where was this when we were shelling out tens of thousands of dollars in adoption fees??? Seriously though .. human life isn't something that should be won on a TV game show. That's really lowering the value of life .. IMHO.

I totally agree that a life isn't something to be won on a "game show" that being said from my perception I don't think that's the intent of the host of this show. And contestants knowingly play the "game" to win a child who if it matter's couldn't conceive a child in the first place.

I guess i'm back on the fence....

Yeah, it's gimmicky, but is it wrong, really?

The potential parents are screened in the same way any other adoption agency would do. I think the saddest part of this story is that children are left to die because the parents are poverty-stricken and unable to care for their child. Tossing an infant in the trash is not an issue that is exclusive to the third-world.

If it were less gimmicky it'd just be any other adoption agency, I guess. It sounds like they're rescuing infants and giving them a home, by any other name. The alternative being to just let them die in the trash bin.

I just don't see it any more wrong than all the disturbing reality game shows anywhere else. Toddlers in Tiaras, anyone?

When we adopted, we had to jump through hoops and be heavily checked out. We had to fill out stacks of forms and practically write a novel about ourselves. We had to go to a shrink so that he could say we were normal (whatever that is) and that we had no hang ups etc etc.

There was a judge involved who had the files of the children in the orphanage. She took all the information about us and our lives, and even looked at our pictures, and then matched us up with the child in the orphanage who she thought would be the best match for us.

Adoption can be a traumatic thing for a child. Many adoptions fail because the bonding doesn't happen. It's really important to match a child with a family carefully .. not with a spin of the wheel or luck of the draw. IMHO. A successful adoption has a better chance of happening when the match is carefully considered.

I'm sure these Pakistani contestants are not being screened as thoroughly as anybody in the western world. I'm with you there, and agree with why it's essential to the process.

But...I guess I have nothing else to say on this. I just try not to judge other cultures with my own standards even if I disagree with or disrespect what they're doing. Sometimes they just have to do what works depending on the conditions they're given.

Perhaps the Game Show Guy is doing something Good that could not be done in other ways.

What is strange is that a society exists wherein TV GameShows and Garbage dump babies occur at the same moment in time. Surreal.

Just remember, this doesn't only happen in some far off, strange place on the other side of the world. It happens everywhere. I've seen it happen in well-off, "rich" neighborhoods too. Dumping a baby isn't always just an "economic decision."

I agree, it's disturbing however one wants to add it up
