Archaeologists in Turkey discover a piece of a cross related to Jesus

The archaeologists were excavating at the 1350-year-old Balatlar Church in the Black Sea province of Sinop, reports the Hurriyet Daily News.

They unearthed a stone chest, containing the cross fragment, along with the skeletons of more than 1000 people.

Not sure how they've determined the cross fragment is related to Jesus.

But that's what they're saying so it will be interesting to see what further tests will yield.

“We have found a holy thing in a chest. It is a piece of a cross, and we think it was [part of the cross on which Jesus was crucified]. This stone chest is very important to us. It has a history and is the most important artifact we have unearthed so far,” said the head of the excavations, Professor Gülgün Köroğlu.

Any ATS archeologists know any more about this?

would be best if they claim no such thing
history has been rife with fake artifacts. basically, like xmas, don't go by what the box says.

Even as a christian I have to agree with Phage on this one.

What evidence is there that this was related to Jesus?

Lots of archeologists christian or not are supressing finds that dont fit in with convensional histoer. Or make silly claims about finds.

Thats just about typical of a biased dig. Come out with a fantastical claim, with potential importance to a vast number of persons worldwide, only to provide absolutely no further detail, an explanation for thier thinking on the matter, nor any supporting evidence.

There's a marked difference between Christian "archaeologists" (e.g. Ron Wyatt) and Christian archaeologists. This article actually refers to neither.

What can be inferred from this is that the archaeologists in question found a chunk of wood. That's all. Further testing might suggest something more substantial, but I doubt it.

Unfortunately the middle ages in particular were rife with false 'artifacts', often made by priests etc. looking to encourage pilgrimages to their parish (it's all about the money).

...most likely, that's precisely what this is... an artificially created 'artifact' with no real connection to Christ or the cross. Frankly, I think the cross itself would have been of very little interest to those who were actually present in the time of Christ. It was never the subject - just an object that happened to be involved in the death of Christ.

So they suspect it may be a piece of the gibbet used to execute Jesus

According to legend, St. Helena — the mother of Emperor Constantine — found the cross in Jerusalem and distributed pieces of the wood to church leaders in Jerusalem, Rome and Constantinople (present-day Istanbul in Turkey).

Later in the 4th century, St. Cyril of Jerusalem said the whole world "has been filled with pieces of the wood of the cross."

No doubt if they radio carbon date the Cross...eh.. lump of wood,..they will come up with a date of around 600 AD.

Back then who would have thought to keep pieces of wood from a crucifixion? Besides that, weren't the crucifixes used multiple times?

Millions of people were crucified throughout history, what the hell makes them think Jesus was in there? These people are pathetic and just looking for attention or money. I know it's not your fault OP because you were just posting it but I would say these people don't know what there talking about, and even if say it was Jesus...how the hell would they know? It's not like we have his DNA stored somewhere so we can test it.

How can you tie a piece of wood to a particular person 2000 years ago? It is not as if the crosses had serial numbers on them or anything. This is a ridiculous claim and anyone who believes this is clutching at straws..

I thought they were too, although the story goes had to carry his own cross before being crucified.

So maybe keeping a piece of the cross was something they did?

Even then, how would they know it was the one he was nailed to.

I wonder if they got a 'free gift' for every purchase over 99.99 of whatever coin of the realm was in fashion.

Oh were there a bunch of beetle bugs that ate the cross containing the DNA of Jesus that they can use to clone him bringing forth the antichrist and the end of world??!!! GASP!
