Having read the article, the op is asking is this about money or is it about something else, with what all is coming out of Hollywood.
Before we look and try to answer that question a brief history of Hollywood may be in order and we go from there.
Hollywood was a small community in the 1870's. Later it merged with the city of Los Angeles. Motion pictures came about in 1867, with the
zoopraxiscope, later on, the first camera, that used moving films was invented in 1895. In 1891, the Edison company managed to show the Kinetoscope
and in 1896, came up with an improved version of the Vitascope, the first commercially successful projector in the USA. This was at a time when
monopolies were common and those who had them would do anything to protect them, and thus the company called the Trust. It would endure and then end
up getting dismantled by the Federal government. Before that time, any company caught filming for profit would risk being attacked. Hollywood was
ideal, due to the favorable lighting condition and how close it was to the US/Mexico boarder.
But back to the history, as it turned out the independant companies located to Hollywood, as the prices were cheap, the weather ideal for doing movies
and ultimately alot of the studios set up shop there. And all Sorts moves to that location as to be the new means of using a media to make money.
Well lets just say that the actual article that is mentioned, many people find shocking, yet is it? After all up until World War I, the business
language and one that every one wanted to lear was German. It was a mark of education to learn German, to make a mark in the German world, with many
business contracts. This would continue up until the out break of World War I, afterwhich German lost its prestige and position in the world. But it
was still a large market, propering and benifiting.
So here is the question, you are out to make money, would you risk loosing a large market by offending a country? Like so many those in a
dictatorship, offending the leader is a good way to get black balled. And it is not the first time that Hollywood and the entertainment industry had
to make these kinds of decisions. After World War II, there was the McCarthy hearings and the number of people from Hollywood were forced out into
the street all do with what they read, or who they associated with or even who worked for them. Take Charlie Chaplin, he was forced to leave the
country all cause he did not believe in what the federal government was doing.
Hollywood was changing, TV started to raise up and funny, that there was one man who foresaw the potential for either good or evil that this new media
posed to the general public. How errie that it was that in his speech given so long ago, where he pointed out that it would be this new media, the TV
and entertainment industry that would either raise people up to where they were enlightened about issues of the day, or plunged down into
ignorance.
Hollywood, has become part of a cog in the entertainment industry, where money dictates what is and is not produced, and it is the public that
dictates what it will and will not tolerate.
While we may see such in the past as being bad, the question is how will it affect the future? After all if you look at the more recent films, it
seems as though there is an Asian power, China, where the films do not show it in a negative light, if anything it is either positive or muted. I do
wonder what is the next country to influence the entertainment industry will be.
