Liberals are capitalist hypocrites pretending to care for everyone. Progressives tend to be realist regardless if they are authoritarians or not. Look at france, holland, spain, portugal, italy, greece, belgium as progressives.

Why dont they try censoring in those countries? Lol they try that crap in france there would be a civil war!

Just imagine an old couple who never had internet before. Do you think they're going to think to opt in? And do you think they'd opt in to porn if they heard that's all it is. And suddenly those two will likely never happen on any outlawed conspiracy sites.

Most of the general population will just accept the default settings and go on their Facebook. This will most definitely stop people from going to the depths of the internet where the real interesting information is.

Why would they block alcohol and smoking websites when both are legal activities

I think freedom of information is a fundamental right for all humans. If someone watches inappropriate material and commits a crime then punish him/her for the crime and leave everyone else alone. Just because less than 1% of the population is too immature is a piss poor excuse to censor something for everyone.

This IS indeed a slippery slope and an unnecessary one. Start somewhere and then keep adding more and more till the majority start speaking up. At least with guns the arguement can be made that they are made to both protect and kill while its the polices job to do that, thus citizens should not be encouraged to take the law into their own hands.

By putting clamps on the Internet, governments are likely to not only alienate their citizenry, but also the ability of their own economies to stay competitive on the global stage.

That's definitely true, it is basically sabotaging the U.K.s citizenry and economy in order to hold true to some kind of outdated dogma. Terrible idea. Who benefits from this? No one.

It is simply an act by a government that is not informed enough to make good decisions, or more than likely xenophobic.

Does the U.K. think it is an economic and military powerhouse still? That was at least 50 years ago, and more than 100 years ago as far as having an Empire goes.

I don't understand why countries that obviously need global connections to survive are severing them.

However - I am glad there is an opt-out button!

These plans are a misguided attempt to protect children from accidentally seeing the 'worst' of the web. There are already laws that cover this sort of content in shops and for TV and no-one argues about censorship. I don't see anyone arguing that the current child porn filters are the 'thin end of the wedge' either.

The government is aware that many parents do not supervise their children's online activities so their plan appears to be the logical solution. Those who want unfiltered access will need to turn off the filter. I can manage that.

I'm sure that the government is aware that those who want access won't be stopped.

What I would worry about more is what is getting blocked without your knowledge. I look forward to seeing only positive sites about China with Huawei's filter...

The Powers That Be in modern society have always sought to silence and vilify shamans, witches or anyone connected to the earth, to real spirituality. The education system, workplace, political system and justice system in the modern world are all structured to pacify, not just through obedience to authority, but by weakening the right-side-of-the-brain, spiritual mind. The System does not want strong, spiritual individualists who will question authority and their lies and artificial structures, and possibly lead revolutions against them. They want the populace confused, misinformed and stupid. Formal religions are fine because they are power-structured and turn spirituality into something obscure; something you must listen to a minister preach about for many years to understand.

Real spirituality comes from the land, from exploring one's soul and through esoteric knowledge. This is just one more step towards the obliteration of The Spirit of Humanity which has been going on for centuries now.

This is just a strategy used by governments, you just have to read between the lines.

When Governments want to ban something that a lot of people might complain about they threaten to ban a whole bunch of other stuff as well. But this is just a threat. Because they know the people are going to complain and force the government will take a step back , but they only step back as far as the original thing they want to ban which in this case is access to certain types of porn and maybe a few other sites as well.

This way 'the sheeple' think they have a victory and have excersied some power over thier government and they still feel in control. But in reality the government got what they wanted in the first place.

You just have to look at the bigger picture. They do NOT want to ban Esoteric, alcohol, smoking, web forums they are just trying to get people to complain so they can appear to be beaten back..to a point.

I wish I could say this could only happen in the UK because UKers are a uniquely servile and collectivist people but the reason it really makes my hair stand on end is that I know this is only the beginning and this IS going to spread.

What this is is what we have all known was coming for a long time. Western governments have been battering down virtually every barrier that existed to keep them from abusing their authority and they are finally nearing their goal. There simply isn't much left to stop them. This is the beginning of the end of the internet as we have known it. And there won't be much anyone can do about it.

Nerds will still be able to do whatever they feel like doing online but dummies like me will be screwed.

Watch for this to start in the US. It is inevitable.

Hmm....careful what stones you through, mate. British citizens are probably saying the very same thing about NSA surveillance on it's own citizens.

Well I'm not a US citizen either but you are right, most of the worlds governments are run by highly corrupt idiots. It's not entirely fair to put all the blame on the UK citizens but it's not entirely truthful to say they have no part in the problem either.

Well, since the very broad term "Web Forums" was on that list, I guess it's safe to assume so. Goodbye, UK brethren, we'll see you beyond that Great Firewall in the sky.

Actually, if you read the information it says that ISPs by default will be required to turn the content monitor on and people have to state that they opt out of using the ISP content monitoring. Nothing is being banned, people just need to say they don't want to use it.

Please check the facts before making it seem a bigger deal than it is, although to be fair it's unlikely that such a scheme would really be workable.
It will start as an opt in scheme, then after a while new ISP subscribers will have no choice, it will be madatory.

I hear there are a few ISP's that are refusing to use this filter though, so when it comes i will just switch to one of those.

What conspiracy sites are outlawed? Where is the real interesting information of which you speak and by referencing it you are assuming would be blocked? Why would an old couple have any less foresight than someone not old?

my biggest beef is if the government filter out website which give useful information on drugs and other substances which people may make an informed decision !

then hundreds of kids start doing drugs without being able to find out the details and die because they OD

and yeh pretty much everything on ATS about esoteric studies , mysticism , occult , parapsychology, etc etc will be blocked.

also information on the Pineal gland and DNA activation and so on and so forth

Well, you know, the television was/is the most powerful propaganda tool in the history of mankind. The internet is a more powerful tool but it's really not ideal for propaganda as it exists today. They can easily have complete control over the other mediums. The internet is far more complicated and harder to control. They need to be able to control it the same way they did/do TV or it is far too much of a threat to their stranglehold on information.

As much as I don't want to believe it, I think the potential of the internet was maybe something they weren't entirely ready for and it's taken them this long to start to catch up.

But never doubt this for a moment. They WILL control anything that is as powerful as the internet sooner or later. Because they have to. A free internet is the exact opposite of everything they are.

the problem always has been with this sort of blanket ban is it only affects people who are trying to go about everyday stuff because the filter sucks. did anyone watch the recent top gear episode? it will ban orange lol.

but seriously anyone who wants to look at the "banned" material will find a way around it, and the everyday layman who doesn't know anything will get stuck when trying to play a facebook game or something and it wont let them.

What about the internet that's inside our mind? How long will it be before they start trying to ban particular thoughts inside our mind? What about banning what people can do privately?

Just being able to ban things at the ISP-level gives them a tremendous temptation. Once it's in place and they're presented with some perceived threat, the impulse is to use it.

At its basic level, this is just parents wanting to block inappropriate internet content, so that their children cannot view it intentionally or by accident. But shouldn't it be parents that decide what the definition of inappropriate is? I suppose some parents will let the government decide.

This reminds me of a quote: "Stay down and feel tyranny, get up and feel freedom."

Freedom isn't free, but some forms of freedom are cheaper than others. Either way, you have to get up and do things to experience freedom. You have to be active about it.

Is it against T&C to post links to some of these supposedly evil-enough-to-block esoteric websites? I'd love to see what all the fuss is about.

Also, to the two authors whose posts I read, could you link your books? Do you guys have e-book versions? I wouldn't mind checking them out...and if they're for pay, then I don't mind contributing to your profits since it seems that you may be losing a chunk of your UK profits soon.
