UK to Censor Esoteric Websites

There is a danger that in the rush to criticise Cameron et al, people will make things up to make it sound really, really bad. To the OP, has Cameron actually stated the UK will censore "esoteric websites"? No, he has not, unless you like watching women being tortured. Fun, eh?

The fact is that the current proposals stem from a view – likely supported by the majority – that hard core porno is too accessible and may lead to harm. Indeed, several high profile murder and abuse cases seem to have been grounded on access to porn.

With regards porn, whether you think parents should take responsibility, or not is irrelevant, because the fact is that children are exposed to porn. As a parent I welcome additional filtering, because I am persuaded that the type of porn that is readily accessible is potentially damaging.

On the proposals to limit access to rape and violence-based porno, see above. Christ knows why people think this should be freely available.

On proposals to extremist websites, well why not? These websites extol a culture and a worldview which I find repugnant and making then harder to find is progress. I don’t know many people who would argue that child porn should be accessible – in fact, I know no one who would take that view.

Oh, I know that some people will cite “thin end of the wedge” and “free speech” and all that, and I agree this is a concern. However, this is not curtailing free speech is it? If you want to opt in to porn, then that’s your choice. If you want to watch videos of people being beheaded and women abused, then F-off to somewhere where you can masturbate your pointless life away.

Regards

As I clearly stated in the OP, I understand putting the kibash on snuff porn and bomb-a-stranger-you-disagree-with sites. Not that the worst of that is on the open web, anyway, but W/E.

Did you happen to read the title? Esoteric websites, last I checked don't feature any of the abhorrent content you (rightly) take objection to. Hence, my bafflement at their being included on Nanny-State's no-no list.

Hauwei is apparently the company that Cameron has chosen to build this "opt-out firewall"...

David Cameron's pick to build the U.K. porn firewall may surprise you

Wow, and people complain about the USA?

This is some "Children of Men" or "V For Vendetta" dystopian crap.

Well, for years now you Brits have had camera trees on every corner, some even with loud speakers. I laugh when I have friends say, "Man, I want to move to England!"

When I reply, I tell them, "Look, it's not like Dr. Who is hiding behind every corner, or like Grahm Norton will be your best friend. If you're lucky you'll get to drive a Fiat. Besides, it rains all the time. You might be able to get a Kinder Egg, though."

The block will not work, these idiots will never get that. Granted that the common folk will be temporarily disconnected but just until the circumventions are known at large. It just creates artificial resistance at a cost, that cost is competitiveness and freedom. The next big scandal will be when another idiot decides to censor something that he clearly shouldn't under this stupid filtering to his own advantage...

So the police state is not limited to the US our friends in the UK are now becoming victims of what the corporate powers of governments are up to, keep the population submissive, feed them only what the government interest wants and keep them oblivious of the "bad things" this sound like a bastardized utopia

Are conspiracy sites ban to?

It looks like the intent was to block material that might be found "objectionable." I find it quite humourous what they labeling as "objectionable." Especially in regards to esoteric material....

Psssttt....if you don't understand why this is so funny, take a look at the occult history (esoterica) throughout British history and most certainly existing today.

Someone is just going for shock value. They know there is absolutely no chance that this would actually go through.

Hate to say I told ya so....... Crap like this always happens, allow them to censor an inch, and they will censor a mile. You should in theory be able to get around it using the TOR browser bundle, people in china, iran, etc use it to get around their stupid censorship policies.

It's all good saying, we could just use the TOR browser, but this shouldn't be happening. We as a nation the US included seem to be moving backwards instead of forward.

It's like people love all things autocratic, and were willing this to happen because it sounded fun and would make a good movie. Now that motions are being driven towards that direction, it's all gotten too real and people are only just starting to wake up.

Now I know these are only small steps, but once the foots in the door It's hard to close it.

How far is too far? What if one day I have to use TOR? I believe that will be the day that 1984 begins.

t the UK Open Rights Group have been talking with whistleblowers from the ISPs that have met with the government's censorship grandees, and they report that the censorware will come equipped to block an enormous swath of legal Internet content, and unless you untick the boxes, this will all be censored for your Internet connection:

Do you want to block

☑ pornography
☑ violent material
☑ extremist and terrorist related content
☑ anorexia and eating disorder websites
☑ suicide related websites
☑ alcohol
☑ smoking
☑ web forums
☑ esoteric material
☑ web blocking circumvention tools

boingboing.net...

edit on 29-7-2013 by Eidolon23 because: Still freaking weird, if you ask me.

note that last bit in larger font...
this goes down, and if you are affected,
you won't be able to download tor.

might i suggest being a bit proactive?

Hmm....careful what stones you through, mate. British citizens are probably saying the very same thing about NSA surveillance on it's own citizens.

This is just a strategy used by governments, you just have to read between the lines.

When Governments want to ban something that a lot of people might complain about they threaten to ban a whole bunch of other stuff as well. But this is just a threat. Because they know the people are going to complain and force the government will take a step back , but they only step back as far as the original thing they want to ban which in this case is access to certain types of porn and maybe a few other sites as well.
[...]

I tend to agree, though I doubt that porn is the actual target of this. My guess for the target would be "extremist sites" (extremist being anything that opposes the government) and web forums such as ATS.
Well, given how many critically thinking people ATS has, I actually think you could throw in ATS with the "extremist sites" as well.

Wow, guess the people calling out that pornography won't be the only censorship there, were right. U.K., according to Snowden(See here), the spying is even worse than the US. What's next can we expect conspiracy? Can we expect ATS to be censored there, considering it has esoteric topics? Beginning to feel this is just a test run now, expect it in other places unless it's stopped.

And people thought china was bad.

China meet UK!

British people have no right to complain about china, north korea, iran, etc. anymore.

You guys will be on equal par pretty soon. But at least their economy is better than yours. You guys are gonna have the censorship with a capitalist feudalist economy in place. That sucks! You should ask for the socialism as well to complement the censorship. Its like all foreplay and zero sex. Ouch!
