With all the decisions being made behind closed doors every day that we the public have no knowledge of, it stands to reason that we simply will wake up one day and "POOF" the internet will have disappeared.
I for one hope it does, while I have become accustomed to the daily ritual, I would welcome the decision to pull all the plugs; I long for the simpler days of being brainwashed and manipulated by the cable news.

A source told me that there are more than a dozen 'bottlenecks' in the internet, on the continental or global scale. Source claimed that those bottlenecks are administered and open because the US govt spends money to operate the facilities to keep the net up, world-wide.
He also claimed that most of it was in the US defense budget, but that it was costing billions per month, and growing as fast at the internet.
Supposedly, every day that goes by, the net gets a little more rickety and a little more reliant on US funds. If they ever cannot pay the growing bill, you'd supposedly end up with a jillion regional or even provincial independent networks, that would become less and less compatible the longer they were separated.
A story, nothing more.

The internet would never "Go down" the powers that think they
are in charge can do what they will, but as we all know to many
hackers out there that would step up and find a way around
anything the ones wanting to take it down.
