The Vatican and Italy have signed a deal to investigate the Inquisition, whose wave of trials, tortures and burnings at the stake marked the darkest chapter in Roman Catholic history.
Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the two sides would probe the work of the Inquisition in Italy and Spain, including trials for heresy and sorcery, and other alleged offences against the faith.
The Church has already sought forgiveness for this medieval and Renaissance-age wave of repression across Europe that used torture, summary trials, forced conversions and burnings at the stake in the hunt for heretics.
