A Bill to provide a system of national service for young persons; and for connected purposes.

Ok it's not been passed. But it's almost at the reading / discussion stage.

Can anyone provide me with anymore information about this?

This is a tad worrying.

What does that mean?

Iam sure my Grandad will approve of this seeing he thinks this is the problem with youth today.
Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland and Greece still have it.
Who knows maybe it will help some of the UK young get back some self worth which appears to be lacking in many.

Now (tinfoil hat on) maybe they are doing this for another reason? maybe they know what is around the corner and want a steady supply of grunts?

It's a Private Members bill, which says it all really.

It isn't Government policy and, to be honest, without Government support most private members bills won't make it into Law.

The guy who is sponsoring this Bill, Philip Hollobone MP, is a very right-wing Tory. He has previously sponsored Bills to ban the Burkha and is also in favour of the Death penalty as well as actual conscription into the Army.

Some of our youth today don't want to commit murder for anyone let alone the government. Maybe that's why they are sponsoring computer games that involve shooting people hmmm. I don't see this becoming mandatory and I believe that we all have the right to choose and not to be pushed into joining up.

It won't even become law, much less anything else. It'll get torn to shreds in the Commons and won't even see the inside of the Lords.

It means nothing - before everyone gets their collective panties in a twist, they should learn about UK Parliamentary procedure, especially concerning Private members bills. This is not Government policy, but rather an aspect of our Democracy that allows MP's to submit their own Bills - most fail, especially without the sitting Governments support.

Lets just hope stumason because if this does go through then I can see the government telling benefit claimants join or lose your benefits
I wouldn't be surprised if that happens nothing surprises me any more in this country. What the hell has happened its like its gotten a lot worse in one year I mean that's just insane.

YOU AGAIN

Hi Stumason. I understand this is all pie in the sky at the moment, but assuming it wasn't, then "connected purposes" would surely have a meaning, after all, someone thought to attach it. I'd really like to know what it means.

They made it mandatory before so why not now? I mean its a good way for them to kill as many people as they see us all as useless eaters using up their resources.

There's no need to hope - it has little support even amongst the Tories, much less cross party and without Government support, it's dead already. This is just an academic exercise really.

And no, things are not that bad, really - it annoys me when people make out like this country is so awful - compared to a great bulk of the world, we live in absolute luxury. Keep things in perspective.

Yes, me again

"Connected purposes" is just legalese you find on all Bills:

Long title

In the United Kingdom, the long title is important since, under the procedures of Parliament, a bill cannot be amended to go outside the scope of its long title. For that reason, modern long titles tend to be rather vague, ending with the formulation "and for connected purposes". The long title for older Acts is sometimes termed its rubric because it was sometimes printed in red

In short, it means nothing really.

National Service was only used in times of extreme National emergency, such as the World Wars and fell out of favour in the UK during the 60's when we demobbed and went for a full, volunteer Professional Army once more (like we had prior to both World Wars and during the Victorian Era).

Given we are actually cutting regular numbers and boosting reserves as Government policy, these is zero chance this would ever get passed Parliament.

That said, I have always thought that some form of National Service, even like the one they had in Germany which gave you a choice of the Military or Community service, would be good for the Youth.

I`m disgusted.

Not in the tories , we all know how scummy they are ..... I`m disgusted in the people of England.

Too busy living in fear of paper and numbers ... where are the REAL people who actually care enough to do something about these pathetic brainwashed tory psychos ?

I`ve sat by and watched my countrymen hang their heads in shame for things they haven`t even done.

It`s about time people got their heads out of their ars*s , realised that the NHS has not failed , all of our debt is numbers on a screen , and the current government is actually laughing at each and every single one of you who turn on the unemployed , disabled , and immigrants .... they are shifting the blame to others and causing division amongst you to divert the attention of the masses from the draconian dictatorship David Cameron is running.

They want to kill you , they want to starve you , they want to beat you and your children into submission .... they want to own your mind ... and they have enough imaginary money to do so.

Stand up and be heard , or be slaughtered with the herd .

The only reason it would be good for the youth is because they have nothing else. Would it be good for them if they all had full time jobs with sensible pay?
I dont think they need enforced service of any kind. Whats needed is a government prepared to create decent jobs. Where I live the youth are not a problem, we dont see much vandalism theft or any kind of crime really, but we've got a lot of youth who are fed up with not being able to get more than a couple of days per week of work. How can they plan a future when they cant get a job?

I could think of someone else who needs to get their head out their arse!

C'mon man, you've gone off on a rant about something that is totally irrelevant.

Would you be saying that if you were a youth ?

"I`m better than you , my opinions and decisions are superior because I am older .... so go die for money "

Sounds like a very fair society , with a very bright future . A country adopting this would be booming with business yes ? with 60% of future generations being killed with a head full of lies for the sake of gaining a little oil , and 40% of future generations wasting some of their most productive years painting fences and cleaning your duck pond out . Bearing in mind we have an aging population , so all the old fogeys would be doing all the work ...... What could go wrong ? ... I mean ... apart from all your skilled workers dying out and your future workforce has either been completely wiped out on botched invasions , or wasted 6 years painting fences for joe bloggs .

I used to think the same during the "good times" when I was a "youth" myself - this isn't new thinking. It would teach them responsibility, discipline and a sense of duty which is something that is sorely lacking in the modern generation of the entitled who expect the state to provide.

As for the lack of opportunities, unemployment is falling and never reached anywhere near the heights of the 80's/90's recession and there are plenty of jobs out there for those willing too look. Quite a few of the "young" went to University and got worthless degrees under Blair's little project to get everyone in Uni, no matter what, so that doesn't help when you have legions of people with Media degrees. There are however a record amount of Apprenticeships available - more so than when I did mine at the tail end of the last century. Instead of focussing on the Media headlines of doom porn, dig a little deeper and realise that the bulk of it is blown all out of proportion.
