I love a lot of old music from the 20's and 30's, but I love Belle Baker's version of Sing You Sinners, the song that inspired the Fleischer cartoon Swing You Sinners:

Great thread, some treats in here, thanks all.

Harry Partch "Seventeen lyrics of Li Po"

Probably not the original recording, 1936 I believe. Big influence on Waits.

When I think pre-1940s / '50s, a few names spring to mind.

Robert Johnson - Crossroad Blues (1936)

Leadbelly - Where did you sleep last night? (1944)

Just for the craic, gamers will know this one..

This was one of my favorite songs as a kid. It qualifies for the thread, I believe, because Merle Travis first recorded it in 1946, but this version (1956) by Tennessee Ernie Ford is the one I knew. We used to sing it in the car on trips with the family. Do people even sing in the car anymore? If not, they should.

The lady giving the introduction was the wonderful Dinah Shore.
