Good points made ... what about your brain chip being hacked? What about your brain chip getting a virus? It can be used as a two way transmitter and you'd never know it. And whoever was in charge of the chips (really in charge) could send frequencies that calm or irritate .... what if the government wanted a riot someplace to take peoples attention away from what they are really doing? etc etc ....

And what if they (in control of the infrastructure / chips) simply played the waiting game untill most of the population had decided there was a great benefit to having these chips, instant 'device less' communications, medical diagnostic and monitoring (heart patients, diabetics, epilepsy etc), enhanced learning (a la the Matrix - plug in and download experiences and instructions), pleasure centres stimulated (huge pornography 'experience' potential) and many other perceived benefits, and having seen no problems with people who were early tech adopters who had gotten the chips..for say..10 - 20 years..then, once the overwhelming majority had them installed...the controllers almost effortlessly sent the command to cease bodily functions to every online chip?

Or sent a command to the sub-conscience to go to sleep...and don't wake up again.

Or sent the command to initiate overwheling and extreme and violent anger / uncontrollable rage...we'd all kill each other in a matter of days.

Or sent the command to vote for Mr. or Mrs. X (despite their latest financial/lobby/sex scandal/corruption)...or buy Brand X from Corp X...or ignore the man behind the curtain?

Or just took a regular and secret download of your thoughts, feelings and intentions directly from your brain?

Or ANYTHING else?

Sure, it's always a great idea until the sinister angles start being exploited by the gits.

I would bet the farm that you would have buffoons and jackasses lining up by the thousands for this nonsense.

Natural selection is a beautiful thing sometimes.

... or what if "THEY" sent all these super duper I'm-so-paranoid-about-technology-I-pee-myself-every-time-I-think-about-it commands directly to people's:

Cell phones
Televisions
Radios
Computers
inside nanobots in your food and water
engineered and weaponized viruses
???

Somebody call a whaaah-mbulance.

Every one of you are hypocrites, squealing like frightened little piggies in the slaughter house about some scary brain chip, the entire time you're poking at your external brain chip cell phones, tablets or computers. Everything you claim you fear about brain chips can already be done to you through subliminal influence, social engineering, direct hypnosis, scopolamine, or any other number of other methodologies.

There doesn't need to be a chip in your head to send signals to your brain. Those signals can get turned up and beamed directly at you through your puny little skull via satellite, black vans, helicopters, or whatever.

Run around and be all superstitious or delusional paranoid about it all you want. We're on the cusp of reaching the next stage in human evolution: self directed evolution.
You can huddle in the dark little caves of your own skulls like all our frightened little monkey ancestors before if you will. Some of us, however, will choose to take control of our own destinies, directions, mortality, and futures beyond the dictates and restrictions of Darwin, and Imaginary invisible sky gods.

everytime i read your posts something bad voices wise happens, meaning i feel and hear a click in my head, and voice comes on saying something about how they can no longer mess with me. Im sick of outside influences, ive done my job, your all weak if you think technology can enhance you, it will only ENSLAVE.

Let's not forget Darwin's family became a horde of inbred freaks.

You fail to recognize the massive amount of personnel required to send whatever nonsense you are making up into people's skulls. There is a massive difference between being able to automate signals directly to millions as opposed to targeting individuals.

Why not just post lots of emoticons as your insults to other posters concerned about potential misuses of this technology is tantamount to a school-yard teasing.

Have you ever played the video game Deus Ex? It also brings to light the important influence industry will have over the development and steering of technology which does not have the best track record historically.

Basically I think you are delusional and completely blinded by your own fantasies to actually consider the impacts of this technology rationally.

LoL to think you claim of having gone to college at 16 and can not even present a counter argument without resorting to absurd name calling.

As per internet vernacular; Do you even History?

I suspect you don't.
Photography, radio, television ... inch by technological inch there's been a demographic of people cowering in the shadow of progress.

Mirrors are portals to the underworld.
The camera will steal your soul.
The Radio waves will get inside your head.
The Television can watch you watching it.
Backwards recordings on music will make you worship the devil.
The list goes on.

Now, look at all the comments in this thread.
Try to look at them from the perspective of future history.

Are you scared of cameras stealing your soul?
Are you going to start worshiping the devil of Christian mythology if you get exposed to rock and roll music with backwards messages?

Have some sense.
Have a sense of humor as well.
Insults?
I'm insulting no one.
I'm laughing.
Everyone quivering in fear is insulting themselves.
It's embarrassing.
It's also quite hilariously fascinating too where we see these same sentiments and invocations of superstition and mythology as well as paranoia and distrust out of the near forgotten corners of history.

Shake some bones and beads and invoke mystical spirits all you like.
Conspiracy away about the evils of Big Corp, Big Brother, and Big Whoop.

Superstition, or Technology?
In the end, well, future history will tell.

You cannot equate verbal and written messages on a screen or paper to what you claim are "superstitious" beliefs about the consequences of installing a microchip into the organ which regulates everything in your body from breathing, walking and the ability to blink. Did you happen to forget that? Do you even believe you will be able to afford such a procedure? Oh you want the budget procedure you say at a great discount? You honestly sound really really naïve right now to believe a brain chip is the next step in human evolution. For what, so you can find out what dress your favorite actor wore to the Grammy's with a simple thought? I feel sorry for the guinea pigs that try this tech out first. And if you want to hold a supremacist attitude in a later generation against those who choose not to accept that way of life, frankly that just reflects on your character now IMO. I don't even hold todays humans with much regard over the animals who inhabit Earth, as we harm and kill ourselves and our ecosystem bringing down our quality of life just for fun.

I am not going to make assumptions on how you view those who choose to live like the Amish. Personally, I believe they have the upper hand on all of us. For if all the electricity that made our fun techno gadgets disappeared tomorrow, the bulk of our society would be cutting each other down violently for whatever supplies they can scavenge with little regard for mercy. People like the Amish, or those in third world societies would barely even notice. Who is the superior person in that scenario? People cannot claim to be more advanced than those with less material wealth if they themselves cannot catch fish from a stream or the coast, grow and harvest a field of crops, or even build their own furniture without a manual.

Maybe you think this will enable humans to be like the matrix, and simply instalearn anything from MMA to how to fire the perfect shot from 2000 yards. Even that movie had its tradeoff, the entire human race is enslaved and harvested like crops by a machine society. What do you think humans will have to trade off when or if this technology ever actually becomes viable? you already have trade offs for your nice cell phones, big screen flat tv's and laptops. A higher energy bill then the last generation, not to mention you work hard to pay for virtual data and privacy has gone the way of the dinosaurs. That price is multiplied by the poor bastards who actually live in the lands that have the rare earths that are required to power these devices, which almost no one in the developed world thinks about.

It really does not matter, because no one alive today will be alive by the time such a procedure could ever even be realized.

*sigh*
You're looking at the small picture and being entirely too literal.
It's almost as if you're responding with "Iron Horse" to seeing a locomotive for the first time.
You're not seeing the potential except through a negative bias.

I'm guessing you'd rather all our war veteran amputees and other disabled to go through life with wooden legs, or plastic lumps with hooks as opposed to technologies that interface with the nervous system (our brains):

Revolutionary Prosthetic Controlled by brain

Here's another:

and then there's the thought of technologies that allow those without speech to speak essentially directly with their minds via a brain chip to a computer which speaks for them.

Beyond that, you've thought to text where a disabled person could just send you a text through thought.
Beyond that, there's thought to thought where you can communicate with others who have chips, thinking your thoughts to them while they think back. Technological telepathy!
It'd certainly make some trouble in Vegas where teams of people could work collusion games.

Additionally, the brain isn't as all fired delicate and impossible to operate on for implanting a chip or a lace of fine feedback input and output leads, and doing so where needed as you might think.

Of course there's the entertainment aspect much further down the pipe where you might plug directly into your optic chiasma and auditory center, or even directly into the respective cortex regions to program your own dreams, watch movies with your eyes closed, or any number of other things.

Further down the line we may even have prosthetic brains to enhance our processing, memory and other processes. We can already 3D print some biological material, so, it's not too far fetched we progress along a few fronts of mechanical and biological, as well as a combined efforts to repair and replace those parts of us that fail, or have a tendency toward failure.
We may even progress to the point of printing out entire replacement bodies.
Immortality is projected achievable and the first people to live beyond 200 years are projected to be alive today and around or under 40 years old.

Cost?
I'm not your wage slave type that works for someone else.
Some of us may very well have access to abilities and perks ahead of, above, or beyond the average salary when this comes along if that's the case.
Besides that, if cost is prohibitive as you claim it's going to be, then, most of the arguments most of the frightened luddites are entirely moot. Those that are typically prone to superstitions and unreasonable fears are historically among society's lower income brackets, so, problem solved. Only those of us that can afford such luxurious little baubles of technological wonder will have them, and well, as a market base, I'm not sure it'd be such a good idea to endanger such a small client list with any of the fears chattered out here.

The future, will of course tell us all.

Its quite obvious you are dead set on having a network connected microchip embedded into your brain sometime in the near future if it becomes available. Just try to remember that the chips you cited are sending signals exclusively, but the receiving is still done by the body and brain. The chip google wants in your head will send AND receive. Emphasis on the dangers of the information being received. It only takes one time for a malicious entity to send a signal that will end the human existence you enjoy so much and the experiences that go with it and then simply become cybernetic property with no awareness of the fact you should be enjoying or fulfilling anything.

I will continue to enjoy the natural world and the spiritual bond that we can all share with it in harmony and not in spite of it.

Just be careful and don't be a volunteer for the first gen ok

Personally I think this is amazing, there are very big questions to be answered though to do with this tech like,
Will it make a class system of the chipped and the not chipped? I can see only the rich getting it.
But If available to all imagine the possibilities, like the scene in the matrix movie...you wanna learn japanese, download it and bingo konnichiwa dudes

I really do think because we will not wait for evolution that technology is the next step, I wanna be a cyberpunk

That's kinda like saying; "Don't open your eyes because someone might show you something that you can't UNsee!!!!".

It's also fairly obvious you don't know how these technologies will work, and are basing your fear off some imaginary science fiction device that actually replaces the brain or something.

Your keyboard on your computer is an input system connected to an I/O port where data flows through the green board and all the intermediary chips, and circuits to another I/O port to reach your monitor so you can interact with what you're inputting.

If someone hacks my computer, are they going to be able to control my fingers that press the keys on my keyboard?
Um, I don't think so.

They might be able to put icky pictures on my screen or other annoying things, but, just like a cell phone, I can turn it off then fix the problem.
I'm fairly certain most chip systems getting implanted into people's heads are just really fancy keyboards, ie; Input systems that have I/O functionality.
Sure, there may be some connections to other I/O attached functions that plug into visual and audio, but, at least in the beginning, systems aren't going to be anywhere as complex or capable of any of the nonsense you're going all chicken little over.

No one hacking my computer is going to be able to make my keyboard control my fingers.

I'd recommend you spend some time looking into and learning how basic technologies work, because, it's kind of obvious how many voicing such fears really don't know what they're talking about, and then, from there, looking also at how the brain works.
Learning how these things work might assuage some of your reactionary fears.
I've found that historically, the reason the poor (and uneducated) are predictably fearful and superstitious is because they lack the funds to educate themselves, to do away with superstitious fears birthed out of ignorance.

Now, that's not really an excuse: 700+ Free online courses from top Universities. It's all there. Keys to the Kingdom.
Thus, there's no cause to be fearful over something you don't understand.
Learn.

Druscilla, your fingers touching plastic keys is not the same as a I/O microchip embedded into the very organ that controls the very functions of your ability to live. Noone can send a signal through plastic into your fingers and access your brain. The very claim being made for this chip IS that signal can and will be sent into a microchip which is directly embedded into your brain. You are not comparing apples and oranges, you are comparing apples and broccoli . I will play ball though and just assume everything will be completely hacker proof, secure and can never be tampered with externally.

Well you will have a chip in your brain, and I will have physical keys to type on. The worst I can expect is a mild electrical shock strong enough to somehow send a charge I can feel through these plastic keys if there were an internal system failure. It may tickle just a bit.

What happens if this chip shorts out and fries in your brain?? How much of your brain will you be willing to part with, as well as the cognitive functions that go with it in the one in a million chance this happens? If there are a hundred million brain chips, at least a hundred people will suffer this fate. You really are willing to take that chance for the sake of instant information input and maybe the chance to be part of a massive mental telepathic orgy of privacy invasion as well??

I suppose you would be right at home though completely immobile hooked up to a machine and telling a robotic arm to feed you the food you could just as easily eat as you walk, kind of like the poor soul in the video you posted. it is absolutely not a risk I am willing to take. Especially considering not every implant procedure will even go perfectly either. So not only are there odds that many people out of the millions will have complications from the procedure itself, but the odds the equipment itself can cause a catastrophic failure from physical malfunction don't paint a pretty picture either.

I can put out and survive a fire from plugging equipment into the wall, or even if the equipment itself combusts and ignites during normal use from malfunction. How do you plan on surviving a micro combustion of a malfunctioning chip or even a bad installation procedure within the very organ which regulates EVERY aspect of your physical being.

Your quest for technological hybridization is a self serving quest for enslavement. You are just adding more layers to the requirement of life. You can live fine by walking the Earth, sleeping in a cave or under trees, eating fruit and vegetables from plants, and consuming the animals and their milk/eggs. Add technology and you simply have created more work for yourself. that is about as basic as I can explain it.

Im just going to add that to me it sounds like you may have read a book called The Light of Other Days, by Arthur C. Clarke

And if you have not, I strongly recommend you read it considering many of the thoughts you have regarding human telepathic networking communication. This very concept is reached through a system known as the Nexus, ironically through a collective effort to evade the technology which has completely removed privacy from all existence and TIME! Hell of a read. I think you would like it, assuming you have not already read it. it is part of my collection.

ok you should volunteer to be the implant tester and let some professionals hack your chip, then tell me it's no big deal to have something connected to your lifeforce that can potentially end your reality.

in my opinion, its a good thing.

We are evolving toward a complete human/machine interfacing.

No need to be scared or paranoid, seriously.

Did TV killed people, did internet turned the world into a warzone, are the aliens controling your mind thru radio waves ?

nope.

do your cellphone order you to kill people ?

nope

So please people, refrain the paranoia, you remind me the dark age.

If we listen to fear, we should have stayed stuck in a cave painting mammoths.

Wow, way to take something totally out of context ATS and focus on the wording.

The reason why Google is saying that we're going to have chips in our brains at one point, is because that is a direct quote coming from their creative director - Ray Kurzweil.

For those of you who don't know who Kurzweil is (he's one of my inspirations) he's the modern day Tesla/Edison. He has Tesla's vision of technology and the future, combined with Edison's business sense. At 15, in the late 60's he invented a device that reads books to the blind. From this me met Stevie Wonder, and then made millions making synthsizers in the 70's/80's. In 1980 he founded a computer software company, and that company holds most of the patents used in Siri, Dragon Naturally Speaking, oh and one other big piece of technology -- the watson super-computer that won jeopardy.

He also has an incredible track record of predicting technology advancements.

Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org...

89 out of 108 predictions he made were entirely correct by the end of 2009. An additional 13 were what he calls “essentially correct" (meaning that they were likely to be realized within a few years of 2009), for a total of 102 out of 108. Another 3 are partially correct, 2 look like they are about 10 years off, and 1, which was tongue in cheek anyway, was just wrong

He believes that by 2045 the amount of information that we need to parse on a daily basis will exceed the capabilities of the human mind, and our species will integrate chips to assist with information transactions.

O M G!

Some of you people are just off the scale melodramatic!

Such vivid stories!
Do you guys think about these things when you're hurdling down the freeway at 60mph?
A bird might hit your windscreen and cause you to wreck and die or become a vegetable, or something utterly horrible!
Do you think about the fact that you only have ONE hole to breath, speak, eat and drink from, and death by choking is in the top 5 causes for accidental death? Are you really extra careful when drinking and eating and talking and breathing all at the same time? Will you be now? You could DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not going to define myself by the way I might maybe possibly could potentially die.
I jump out of airplanes for fun.
I go sailing solo by myself.
I go on wilderness excursions solo, by myself, as far off-trail as I can get, for sometimes a whole month!
I do some no ropes solo rock climbing in the wild if it's necessary to get where I want to go.
I've been swimming with sharks!
I've been swimming with dolphins.
I've done cliff diving.

I love adventure.

I'm going to define myself by how I LIVE.
You guys can cower and cringe and worry and be scared about ...
chips in your brain
the government
the apocalypse
war
aliens
mind control
whatever.

I'm going to live!

Be scared.
Live in fear.
Hide in your bunkers
Break out in a cold sweat every time you see a black van.
Wear your tinfoil hat.

I'm going to live and love and laugh and experiment and enjoy life pushing the envelope however and whichever ways I can and might. Who cares how I die?

I certainly don't want to live in fear of everything like you guys. You call that being alive?
