UK border police can seize and download your phone's data for no reason at all

I have used ATS search and cannot find this anywhere so here it is

Police in the UK have the power to seize mobile devices from any traveler entering the country, and can retain their personal data for as long as they see fit, according to a report from the Telegraph. Such blanket powers are outlined under UK counter terrorism laws, and are broadly applied to thousands of travelers each year — regardless of whether police establish grounds for suspicion before confiscating a device. The revelations, published late Friday, have raised concerns among civil libertarians and privacy advocates, and an independent reviewer is expected to propose tighter checks on border police this week.

What do you think of this then? I think Obama and our government have been talking and now they can do this without permission under the terrorism act 2000 even without suspecting you. Our privacy is in danger as they can hold our data till they seem fit to delete ( cloud storage archive more like) Enough is enough grrrr

Edit: So if you wanna come to the UK I suggest that you backup your data and photos to the cloud wipe your phone and laptop then when you are in the UK restore it back onto your devices.

Just so you know: Police in the UK can stop and search anyone anytime and do not have to have a reason. Intuition is enough.

Yes you may say they MUST have a reason and i tend to agree, bare in mind police dont like to waste their own time either and most do have a reason for a search.

Do i mind the phone scanning thing? yes i do, but since my phones been available to anyone with an NSA passcard for years, at least when they do it in the UK i know its happening.... Also...."tehehe" to wiping data and keeping it safe and secure on the cloud!... was that a joke?

EDIT: just to be clear, the typical bobby on the beat must state a reason to search you and what they expect to find, but they dont have to say anything if they have got a senior officers approval for a search, for example you are known to the police for serious crime - thus they can search you in a public place without direct suspicion.

Whatever we do is not safe anymore is it but the governments see us all as terrorists even though we employ them and pay them. Maybe we should give them a pay cut like they have given our businesses.

That's true but they never come out and tell people that it also includes your devices too. And as I said before this happened that they will use the terrorism label to search your devices without your consent which is against the human rights law. We all deserve a right to a human life and privacy unless they have a warrant to search your property. After all our devices are our property and thats like the cops breaking into your home and searching through your papers without a warrant.

Well yes and no, my home is a private residence, when im out in public with my documents and knives a police man could search me bag for things that look like knives when they find documents and letters they may choose to search those too on account of the successful search, acted upon with reasonable cause.

I bet you if you got busted with a pound of drugs and a pink sealed letter labeled "To my dearest Candice" - you can bet they would open it - but a random search with nothing but the letter they would leave alone.

Every cop is not like every other cop, though the public view certainly is painting them all as callus non-military robots.

I do understand that if you have drugs or weapons in your bag they can search your entire bag then. But they shouldn't be allowed to search your bag or devices without a reason or suspicion. They certainly cannot ask you for the password as you would be incriminating yourself. And they cannot hack your devices without your consent.

Edit: Also I've never had the customs in USA copy my data before when I went to USA or any other country for that matter. I have had my eyes scanned and finger print taken though when entering the US.

Prepare to have your holidays in your own country or go abroad and lose your privacy. I can see that happening in the future. This is going to spread to other parts of the world and tourists will either comply if they have nothing to hide or stay in your own country and have your freedom and bit of privacy. This is just terrible

Im from the UK, and there arent camera's on every street corner....i dont know where you got that from? MSM probably lol.
There are lots of cameras in the cities, like any other country. Rural areas like where i live have very few camera's except for the usual security camera's in pubs and business's. The camera's on every street corner is a myth, much like the myth of us brits having bad teeth. With free healthcare i can assure you the majority of normal people (excluding drug addicts, scumbags and alcoholics) have great teeth.....do Americans get free dental care? Free check ups, cleaning, etc?

Good point. However, remember that no one is looking at what is happening on most of these cameras. Many are useless (Poor resolution).

There is no way that citizens of the UK can get rid of these things because of collusion between local government and the police.

They need a revolution!!

Yeah beat me to it, more cameras in a small area than anywhere else, yes but have you seen the citys, its a crazy mess of tiny streets PACKED with people and cars buses etc, you need more cameras when each one only really sees 20 feet Also MANY of them are private firms/residence.

Well its not just the data police and customs CAN obtain, worry about what they already have and who has access to that.

A friend of mine went to USA before the patriot act got stepped up 5 levels, perhaps around 2004. The customs guy asks him (presumly as a random question) "have you ever been in hospital?", he replied yes.

The customs guy then said "yes thank you sir, i see you were in hospital in Switzerland with a broken shoulder after a snowboarding accident"

My friends face dropped "er, yes thats um right...."

This random customs guy on a computer in 2003, knew my friends medical records both military and normal, in front of him, at the touch of a button. Not the president, not the head of the FBI or CIA, just a random customs guard, he didnt even have to ask permission from my freind or the customs cheif/senior. He was absolutely blown away all his life was jotted down for anyone of the MILLIONS of agency and customs staff to browse. what else did they have... WHAT THE HECK DO THEY HAVE NOW?!?!?!

Its a bloody joke. And not a funny one. Remember pre-prism.

Thanks for sharing your friends story with us. That is going too far into ones personal records. Your medical records should be only seen by a medical doctor or anyone who you have a medical appointment with with your consent of course. This invasion on personal records without consent and by a non medical person is beyond diabolic and your friend has the right to sue the US government for accessing their records with no permission also as your friend is a non US citizen they have no right. It seems that the US government thinks that they can access non US citizens medical records without your consent and therefore that is against the data protection act and human rights act. You can get legal advice about that

The UK is generally about 7 years ahead of New York on the sliding-into-the-socialist abyss scale....and New York is about 7 years ahead of the USA.

The police in the UK cannot stop and search for no reason!... There are tons of videos demonstrating this on youtube.
