Who was SOLO?

I've never heard of this "Gary McKinnon" person before today, however after reading an article that deals with his purported actions as SOLO, I have some questions:

What was the political atmosphere like when this event occurred?

Why were there no legal repercussions? (besides his life being ruined,)

Did anyone on the online community know him? I'm surprised that the articles I've found deal with his real-life persona yet ignore whatever digital footprint he left.

His motives/thought processes seemed childish at best,

Was Gary McKinnon actually SOLO, or a different individual? Not charging a 40 something year old man with destruction of property is unusual in an international case of this nature. However, if it were a different person, say one who was a minor, things begin to make much more sense.

If he was actually looking for UFOs in a childish fashion (which seems to be the case,) I wouldn't be surprised if he views this site from time to time.

So any thoughts as to what occurred?

Considering current events, and what happens to hackers/whistle-blowers/crackers, this man was incredibly lucky. I could liken it to a tornado forming a fully functional F-22 fighter jet out of tin cans and roofing nails.

I think he spent most of his time doing the hacking, it became an obsession, like he said. So I don't know f you will find many writings of his on any forums or anything. But it would be interesting if there was. He's probably not allowed to be around computers anymore so anything would be nearly 10 years old if he ever did have a MySpace profile or anything. It's probably been deleted anyway if be did have profiles on any sites. But if you found anything it could be interesting.There are probably a lot of copycat and non intentional copycat SOLOs out there. There are a lot of StarWars fans, and that may even be where SOLO got the name SOLO from, as in Han Solo, the character played by Harrison Ford. Then, of course, you have to weed through the thousands upon thousands of SOLO Styrofoam & Plastic Disposable Cup enthusiasts.... Just kidding. But there are some people who consider themselves to be kind of on their own or doing their own thing or doing things their own way, who may consider the nickname SOLO to be appropriate for their particular lifestyle or worldview or circumstances relating to the act or concept of being SOLO i.e. Alone. I think there's even an old rap song all about Riding Solo or something...

Anyway, I think this story is very interesting, and I wonder what secrets he has not revealed... He mentioned something about a list of off-world officers or lists of ship names that could be space craft, or UFOs. But he didn't tell everything he knew... I wonder if he's told anyone like friends or family. I wanna know the name of a real spaceship!!!! D:

Well, something tells me that our government isn't so inept to put actually sensitive information on computers with no password on an open network.

The guy didn't really seem to "hack" anything, just pissed people off.

I stand by my assumption that "Gary McKinnon" was not the real SOLO.

Maybe because that is the truth.

Maybe because that will disperse resources spent over a wider area... thus lowering the efficiency of resources tied up in perpetual investigation on "Gary McKinnon" and SOLO.

I shouldn't have to spell things out like that, but I will for the sake of the noobs.

That being said, any one who has/pulls this kind of thing will be perpetually monitored for the rest of their lives. Everyone they contact will be investigated.

After reading more internet stuff, I came across something known as "operation solo", can anyone give me anymore information/insight?
