Not buying it.
Island dwarfism is a fact. Many animals, like dwarf elephants on Crete, shrink
in size because of fewer resources.
The hobbits may have started like us, or a Homo erectus like ancestor, and then shrunk because of scarce resources. This does not imply a pathology,
but rather an adaptation to the environment.
I read somewhere that the evolution to "hobbitism" may have taken as little as 500 years. If true, it shows how rapidly our DNA can adapt to
changing environments.
It's a shame that they didn't make it to the modern age.
