Rust could help boost the efficiency of hydrogen production from sunlight - a potentially green source of energy. Tiny (nano-sized) particles of haematite (crystalline iron oxide, or rust) have been shown to split water into hydrogen and oxygen in the presence of solar energy.

BBC article
Cant help thinking that this is something else that will get buried by energy companies. Although it could have some nice ramifications for space exploration/colonisation?

Aren't there vast amounts of iron oxide on Mars? And I bet those 99% pure iron asteroids in the belts could be a good resource for this too.

Bugger Asteroids, my old car should provide enough rust to power a small town!

Interesting idea.

Certainly might change the odds of setting up communities on iron rich planet, anyone for trip to Mercury?
