I don't buy that junk BTW, it's my sister's. For some reason, in the UK, it has become fashionable for teenage girls and twenty-somethings to buy American junk-food from specialised American junk-food shops. There must be a law against this given that half of the ingredients are illegal in this country.

Please keep your poison, we don't need it.

The only other time I've seen a label like that is on the side of Iron Bru.

I think it's great to know there are places there that sell American food. You haven't had fried chicken unless you've has Popeye's from a store thats actually in Louisiana. All other stores change the recipe so they aren't getting the real deal. This is due to most folks not being able to handle the spices. I would LOVE to sample more of your food but don't know where to go. I'm an expert on Cajun Fish and Chips though and would love to open up a place across the pond. I'll put my seasonings up against vinegar any day.

I am talking about real food though.. not a lot of junk with chemicals.

I think the fact there are a lot of ''what chemicals'' comments says a lot. I guess some people don't look for things like harmful e numbers.

While some are vitamin based or harmless, others are know toxins and dangerous to health, hence banned in certain countries. IMO they should be banned everywhere.

A lot of the foods with known toxic ingredients in the UK are American or 'American Style' sweets and processed foods, it isn't a dig at Americans to point it out. If anything Americans need more awareness, seems like food labeling there is way behind, as are a lot of the permitted ingredients. So far as I would say, it violates human rights.

That's what is nice about the UK food. All the additives have an E nickname and there is even a disclaimer on the label. It probably equals to Yellow number 5 and some Red number in the US, which make some kids go hyper.

The downside is, lately, is what is on the label what is really in the food? Oh and it gets stranger when the box says made in China, with the food scandals there.

Some days I think they just boil down a bunch of glue, the same that kids in ghettos get messed up on, and call it a flavoring or a coloring. Petroleum-based. The petroleum is the root of the mental problems. Decent for burning not for eating no matter what color it is or how it tastes.

I can only laugh at the posters who didn't know how to interpret the asterisk on a box of candy and who are still unaware that certain Es are particularly harmful. No wonder.

Hi VoidHawk

You are right to think these E numbers are the cause of a lot of the problems with kids these days, well you know as well as I do that these chemicals are just poisons on the human body.

This is one that stood out to me because it's one that has effected me in the past when I've drank pop and not looked at the ingredients :

E102- Tartrazine
A synthetic yellow azo dye found in fruit squash, fruit cordial, coloured fizzy drinks, instant puddings, cake mixes, custard powder, soups, sauces, ice cream, ice lollies, sweets, chewing gum, marzipan, jam, jelly, marmalade, mustard, yoghurt and many convenience foods together with glycerine, lemon and honey products. It can also be found in the shells of medicinal capsules. It can also be used with Brilliant Blue FCF, (E133) to produce various green shades e.g. for tinned processed peas. Tartrazine appears to cause the most allergic and/or intolerance reactions of all the azo dyes, particularly amongst those with an aspirin intolerance and asthmatics. Other reactions can include migraine, blurred vision, itching, rhinitis and purple skin patches, (because of this more use is now being made of Annatto (E160b). In conjunction with Benzoic acid (E210) tartrazine appears to create an over-activity in children. Not recommended for consumption by children. The Hyperactive Childrens Support Group belive that a link exists between this additive and hyperactive behavioural disorders in children. Whilst being a very commonly used colour in the UK its use is banned in Norway and Austria.

Source

I have gotten migraines of this E number, it came on within 5 minutes of consumption so if these things are not powerful dangerous chemicals I can't really say what is anymore. I mean that is quite a fast reaction for something to go to the brain and have an adverse effect on how it works, if anyone here has ever suffered a migraine they themselves will know just how debilitating they can be.

And that's just 1 of those dirty chemicals.

On another note, people who think this is just sugar and parents shouldn't give the kids so much of it need to think a little more maybe. Sugar is natural (unless you get fake sugar) and just like natural chemicals the body is designed to use it, the enzymes in your saliva help break down starches and turn them into sugars, try chewing some bread for about a minute and you will notice sweet tastes... that's your body making sugar.

Fact is the body needs sugar, just not as much as we pump into ourselves and all these E numbers do not help... I've got an awesome recipe for Toffee Cinder (Honeycomb) that is totally simple and natural if anyone wants it.

Hi!

I've been thinking about starting my own Thread on what sweets and soft drinks can do to a childs mind (especially when you drink or eat the sweet late in the evening)....

Do you know what happens?

You have 'Wet Dreams'

Seriously..... This happened to me on a regular basis until I stopped eating sweets and drinking soft drinks late at night!

I think Tea also has that effect, if you don't go to the Loo before going to your bed!

Maybe it takes some sort of food-racist to spot things like this.
I guess there should be more people aware of what they "eat", whatever their approach.
Anyway, WELL DONE! :-)

May affect activity and attention to children.

Do you even have kids, have you ever been around children?

When they get that special ingredient we call "sugar" into their bloodstream their activities and attention do change. They start running around acting crazy and bouncing off walls.

Have you ever considered that it MIGHT NOT BE THE SUGAR! Clearly from your reply you havent, as like many in this thread you cant get past "Its the sugar!"

THIS is what the thread is about

Notice the little *asterisk symbol? That symbol is being used by the MANUFACTURER to point to the chemicals as the SOURCE of the "effects on activity and attention in children"

Is that clear enough?

I like that, and I'll accept the title
But no, its not necessary to be a food racist, all we need to do is read the label.

With a photo of the label included in the OP, I thought it would have been obvious to a child what this was about, but as you've noticed, people cant see past their programming even when the truth is written in black and white and it's directly in front of them, no-wonder the world is in this mess.

Some of the replies are rather naive. People need to wake up to the realities of toxic foods and toxic food additives, some pose long term major health concerns.

His concerns are backed up by scientific evidence. Dr Neil Ward, a senior lecturer in analytical chemistry at the University of Surrey, has carried out four independent studies evaluating the impact of food additives on hyperactive children, in particular the colourings E102, E110, E123.
'All of our studies have confirmed that additives do have a detrimental effect on the behaviour of hyperactive children,' says Dr Ward.
'We have also found that a lot of so called "ordinaryî children are very sensitive to additives and artificial chemical in their diet, so it's a very widespread problem.
'And we have discovered links between additives and an increased incidence of eczema, asthma and allergies in selected groups of children who consume high levels of additives and artificial chemicals in their diet.'

The parent company of this manufacturer makes all sorts of Nickelodeon, Disney etc toy /sweet combo's, selling unhealthy products aimed at children via their affiliation to some TV show / Movie has to rank high in the unethical food / trade ethics standards.

Environmentally detrimental plastic detritus + toxic sweets + outsourcing to China = Government accredited growth industry

It is impossible to trust governments whose hypocrisy, unholistic and unethical practices are funding such industries whilst punishing individuals for carbon footprints. Outsourcing industry is detrimental to the nations economy. Whilst allowing their nations children access to toxic food aimed specifically for them is anathema to cruelty.

I just see a bunch of ingredients I don't feel like looking up.

I think the affect it describes is from the sugar content.
An increase in hyperness and a reduction in wanting to pay attention.

So why isn't it written on a bag of sugar!
Just keep taking the chemicals and you'll be just fine.

And try looking a little harder at the label.

Its says adverse effects on attention....is that not the mind ???

Therefore the chemicals alter the mind...whether its a drug .... not sure what the definition of a drug is.....if a substance is mind altering then this fits the bill.
