Actually, we can do a lot, under the framework provided to us under the Constitution.
But it would not be fast and it would take the American people to be the driving force in such things.
Recent examples of such: The repeal of DOMA, and Colorado's repeal of the prohibition against Marijuana; or if you like the older repeal of the Prohibition of alcohol, and the Abolishment of Slavery.

The legal framework is there, you just a have to get support from the governed populace to achieve it.

That sounds possible, but the elite at the top that have a vested interest in the way things are would launch a Propaganda Campaign, and I am sure they already have to sway public opinion in their direction.
