Sorry if this has been talked about before, but I did a search for Jay and was surprised to find no results at all. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Jay Dobyns is the ATF agent who, along with numerous other undercover operations, went undercover as a biker trying to break the Hells Angels motorcycle club in Operation Black Biscuit. He has also criticised Operation Black Biscuit

After he came out, he wrote a book about his time spent undercover as an outlaw biker - No Angel: My Harrowing Undercover Journey and received numerous death threats towards himself and his family.

Dobyns reported these threats to Special Agent in Charge William Newell, asking for protection for his family. The threats were based in Arizona and Dobyns lived in Arizona at the time. Newell was in charge of investigating and handling all threats made against agents working out of the ATF Phoenix Field Office. The threats were ignored. When Dobyns essentially "blew the whistle" on Newell, pointing out his failures to address violent death threats against a federal agent, he was retaliated against. Newell dismissed the threats and then covered up his blatant dismissal of those threats within the Phoenix Field Office. Additionally, in response to the ATF/FBI interview, despite all the evidence the death threats were credible, Special Agent in Charge of the Los Angeles Field Division John Torres, who like Newell has also been promoted into ATF headquarters, informed Dobyns through an email, "The Chief of Operations Security does not deem the emergency action is required as of this date and time."

In August of 2008, Dobyns family home was set on fire at 3 in the morning.

When Dobyns reported the incident to both ATF and Newell. He asked for an investigation into the case. Newell not only refused to investigate, calling the incident "just scorching," but allowed his subordinates, including Gillett, to attempt to frame Dobyns, accusing him of purposely burning down his own home with his family inside, has named him as a suspect and is investigating him. Newell conspired to destroy and fabricate evidence to "prove" his case. Emails, witness testimony, phone conversations and other documentation show the ATF Phoenix Field Divisions’ intentions, led by Newell, were to frame Dobyns, yet Newell denied under oath any involvement in this activity. His subordinates Gillett and ATF Tucson Group Supervisor over Operation Wide Receiver Charles Higman, also denied any attempts to frame Dobyns under oath, despite evidence showing otherwise.

The retaliatory actions of Newell, and other ATF management agents, were reported to ATF senior management at the highest levels and were ignored.

Now, Jay Dobyns is currently battling the ATF in court. The title of the lawsuit being Dobyns v. USA; CR08-700C; United States Federal Court of Claims, Washington, D.C. Jay says on his blog

This title of this lawsuit is heartbreaking for me. I am not “versus” the USA. That is a humiliating title and an insult to my patriotism but one that I am going to be forced to live with, and my family is going to be forced to live with from now until the end of time. It carries with it a connotation that sickens me.

On Monday I intend begin proving in a court of law what has been known from both inside and out at ATF, DOJ and the Administration for a very long time – that ATF ignored facts, evidence and the official conclusions of investigators and tried real hard to frame me as a murderer and arsonist. In my case ATF became the opposite of what America expects, demands and is due from a law enforcement agency.

Dobyns claims the agency failed to abide by a 2007 written contract to protect him and his wife and two children against death threats from the Hells Angels.

The lawsuit is now in its second week, and he posts updates every week giving more information.

I rarely post threads, so I apologise if it isn't up to par.

I don't really have an opinion on the case, I just wanted to spread the word. I'm still reading No Angel at the moment and he seems like a genuine, hard working good guy who tries to take down the bad guys. Even if sometimes it goes wrong.

Thanks for sharing, OP. The Overdrive Media collection also has this title and it's where I rented it to listen to in unabridged audio. I mention that because Overdrive powers most local public libraries these days, making it accessible to most people and free!

It was one of the best books I've had on true crime and undercover work and Jay Dobyns should have gotten a medal not what he ended up with. All but a back slap/stab from his own agency and hung out to dry like a two-bit informant.

For those who don't know the story..... He got as high or higher into Organized Crime as it exists in the 1% world of Motorcycle Clubs than anyone in the history of law enforcement. Technically, he'd been "made" a member of the Hell's Angels with all that carries and means to go with it. The ultimate wet dream position for a Law Enforcement Agency of any kind...where enforcing law had squat to do with their priorities.

For all his and his team's effort and risk for years of work? He got unceremoniously flushed after his own superiors screwed the case up so badly by being wimpy little children about seeing it to the end, virtually nothing was recoverable. He handed them a case like nothing since the FBI and the New York Gambino family saw Paul Castellano bugged in his own living room and true to form....the idiot cowboys at ATF screwed even THAT kind of gift up.

Now they'd be happy if the criminals would just kill him and be done with it.
These are the people we see running this nation and enforcing it's laws. (Or NOT enforcing them).

The ATF has always been the most rogue element of federal law enforcement. The ATF should have been disbanded completely after Ruby Ridge and Waco. "Fast and Furious" is just today's face of ATF illegality and constitutional indifference...

He is damned lucky to be alive...

Time will tell how useful that contract will be to his case.

In the mean time, you have 2 of the most powerful organizations in the U.S., on opposite sides of fence, wishing Dobyns would just disappear.

Talk about a man with no allegiances. Must be hell being an angel.

Or... just one of the good guys with a badge who truly and deeply believed in what he was doing. He lived with and rode with some of the most vicious men that world has to offer. Remember the Laughlin Biker shootout? He was peripheral to that for being in town and close when it all happened. Those were the kinds he was trying to get. I have to respect people willing to risk everything so others may live without fear.

So do I however,do you trust corrupt people who ask you to stop corruption??
I am not familiar with the Laughlin thing so I have no idea about that.

Also just to add...I am not a cop basher and most times on ats I get sick of the anti police threads and the cop bashing.
The ATF is corrupt and are higher up on the pecking order then police and corruption is big.......look at people higher up then them like the cia and deny the corruption to me.
If you are going to put your name on the wheel then don't complain when your name comes up.

Sorry...It made huge news across many outlets when it happened because a full and proper shoot out in a Nevada Casino is unheard of. I mean, security in the average Nevada Hotel/Casino would make Fort Knox look like a Kmart budget deal....so it's one place people generally feel safe. I've never carried my gun in a casino, for instance. It's one of the few places I've never felt vulnerable without it..

Dobyns, as I recall, was staying at a hotel opposite this one on the "Strip", such as Laughlin has one ...and was either on his way to the fight when it broke out or had just gotten into it as it blew up. It's been a few years since I read the book. The OP can clarify if he's to that part yet.

The Mongols would have called the Angels “Pinks,” “faggots,” “losers,” “cocksuckers.” I’m sure Smitty heard it all, and I’m sure he didn’t like it. He forced a broad smile and sipped his beer, wiping the suds from his mustache. He watched the far end of the bar, where his Frisco brothers huddled. A group of Mongols orbited them. Something had to give. He walked away from the bar slowly and then, once out of sight, raced back to the Flamingo. He grabbed John “Cowboy” Ward and Rodney Cox and enlisted the Rabbit to help him muster the troops. He put his cut back on. Angels disappeared and reemerged a little more flushed, a little redder with rage, a little more armed. Ten minutes passed. The group fired up in the parking lot. The rumble. They rode down the strip, some doubled-up “bitch style.” They rode down the hill to Harrah’s main entrance. They kicked their stands and fired down. Few talked. There were about thirty of them. They ran into the lobby and turned right. Keys and metal clanked on their waistbands. As they passed the restaurant, they broke off and fanned into the machines. A group of ten moved toward the bar, toward their stranded San Francisco brothers. The Mongols started to act like rats in a flood. Movements became jerky. Adrenaline was so abundant it could have been put on sale. Hank and Mary Citizen were among the fated bikers, playing their games. Some noticed. Some thought, What the—? Some left quickly. Several Hells Angels sat on stools in front of a bank of slots and slipped items out of their vests and boots. Shiny things, dull things, wooden things, metal things. Some of these things made clicking sounds, some of them were silent.

He said he heard all the police cars drive past and another agent said “Well, guess we know where the Angels went.”

The story is typical of these trips....
Once the cops have or cant get their quarry, they just abandon the insider.....
How many cowards does it take to abandon an agent?
Aparently just the top brass at BATF

Dobyns was also involved in the BATF response to the Columbine High School massacre of 4-20-99. I emailed him about it one time; he responded but was very tight lipped about that particular op.

I'm gonna state the obvious because I don't like open secrets. The ATF and HA have one thing in common. Not very many people like them, but here's the deal.......this case just points out how untrustworthy ATF and other 3 letter agencies are. When they talk there's not a word of truth in any of it. If the HA tells you they like you....believe it. They don't like you? Believe it. They'll protect you? Believe it. They'll kick your a** and leave you to the buzzards? Believe it. You may not like their lifestyle, what they do for a living or the way they look, but at least you know where they're coming from and what to expect when they get there. They make no bones about it. ATF? It's obvious. They'll shake your hand with their right and stab you in the back with their left.

You may not like the HA but at least you can count on them to live up to the expectations people have of them.

Looking at it all from that ethical point of view, a person could say they have a higher set of standards.

I think it's a mistake to see the HA as the good guys because they're often more open about their intentions. They have the same goal at the end of the day; to get what they want regardless of right or wrong.

They both belong in jail together.

Also, I made a mistake in the OP but can't edit it; it should say that he criticised Operation Fast and Furious

Knowing what I know, I don’t see any way that this does not make it to Congressional hearings once the facts are released. Senator Grassley, Chairman Issa, Congressmen Gowdy and Chaffetz are going to have a field day with Holder.

I don’t intend to infer that what was done to me rates with Fast and Furious / Brian Terry, Benghazi, the IRS or wire tapping journalists but it will be significant to Americans to learn of how Obama and Holder view and treat those of us who carry a badge and a gun. Those who defend this country domestically from crime and violence are gunna puke.

Prediction #2: Holder will come out and say that he didn’t know anything about it and it never reached the White House. Wrong Two Dogs. This one goes right onto the President’s desk and I have proved it. The corruption in this is sitting on the shoulders of Attorney General. Too bad so sad. He could have fixed it and decided not to. Anyone and everyone who did the wrong thing here is going to be named as accountable. I have been shown no respect, dignity or compassion and none will be extended. God is going to have to be the one to forgive them on this one. That is the cost of doing business against someone who has had everything they ever cared about taken away and trainwrecked. It’s called Nothing to Lose. Oh, and all the facts and evidence on my side doesn’t hurt either. That‘s called Not Giving a F#%k.

One of my favorite books is Hells Angels by Hunter S. Thompson. Check it out if you want to learn about their early history. They are a brutal bunch. Also, see Gimme Shelter, the documentary on Altamont if you want to see the Angels beating up hippies and killing people in public. Today we worry about terrorists, but the Angels were every bit as terrifying back then. Strange how the counter culture embraced them. The 60's werent all peace and love.

I never really implied that they were "good". I was trying to bring home the point that they're not hypocrites. I know we all are to a certain extent, but when you have organizations as large as those two, personally, I would rather see those trains coming than be blindsided by them, because the ramifications mean a lot more than " I like you so I'll call you in the morning".

Dobyns never saw that train coming. ATF threw him under it and left him out in the cold. Say what you will about the HA, but at least they don't do that to their own.

The HA is no joke. Im not saying this is good or bad but i know for a fact they are not to be messed with. I am 100% sure the officer had no idea what he was getting into 100% positive. Now he knows. This may even be a dog and pony show you and i have no real idea. Again im not anything good or bad im just making a simple observation.

And yes they aren't hypocrites and if they say they are after you you better go off the grid for a while until they got something better to do.

Also i looked at all of his websites and information and everything about this guy screams he is still a member. Im just saying. As the saying goes, when you dance with the devil you dont change the devil he changes you and that aint no joke either.
