Gays are currently enjoying plenty of opportunities in employment and government has already stepped in to make certain that they are not discriminated against in the workplace.

Wrong...I can be fired right now in Georgia for being Homosexual and there is nothing I can do about it....SO I do not have the same rights as everyone.

Until Gay citizens have 100% the same rights as their EQUALS, the things gays do to have self pride will continue strong & loud, and probably much longer after that to remember the discrimination.

The only way they could prevent that would be to "allow" one legal marriage (with children from that marriage) and then not recognize any others as "official", but leave the person alone and let him or her fend for themselves.

But I like your idea.
Let the government just get out of the marriage business altogether.
