The German government has expressed the growing public anger of its citizens over Britain's mass programme of monitoring global phone and internet traffic and directly challenged UK ministers over the whole basis of GCHQ's Project Tempora surveillance operation.

The German justice minister, who has described the secret operation by Britain's eavesdropping agency as a catastrophe that sounded "like a Hollywood nightmare", warned UK ministers that free and democratic societies could not flourish when states shielded their actions in "a veil of secrecy".
Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger sent two letters on Tuesday to the British justice secretary, Chris Grayling, and the home secretary, Theresa May, stressing the widespread concern the disclosures have triggered in Germany and demanding to know the extent to which German citizens have been targeted.
It is the first major challenge to David Cameron's government to publicly justify its mass data-trawling operation, which was revealed in documents leaked by the former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden. Germany's chancellor, Angela Merkel, has made clear her frustration that many of the questions raised by the disclosures made by the whistleblower have gone unanswered by the Obama administration.

After half a Germany (East Germany) lived in a STASI Orwelian nightmare half a century they have right to be concerned and anger. Privacy is deeply respected in Germany as fundamental part of freedom. UK is with pants down.

The BBC News channel for internal/domestic UK audience today had 2 "guest commentators" for its newspaper review, and on 1st review at 22:30 BST they said Merkel was wrong and bowed to GCHQ masters.

There are still puppets at BBC, and they are blindly following the D Notice censorship.

The Germans aren't the ones currently setting up surveillance states like America and the UK. If they were anywhere close to doing the same, why would they bring attention to the issue?

Right now, the US has far surpassed anything Germany has ever done to monitor, spy, entrap, criminalize its own citizens. The US is nothing but the dream that Hitler had envisioned.

He would be proud and awed...

Peace

A few days ago Diane Feinstein stated that the US government has to get and question Snowden because they (government) wants to know what he (Snowden) knows.

My question is; doesn't the government already know what Snowden knows?

What are they trying to hide?

How this correlates to this threads topic is that I honestly think we're seeing just the tip of the iceberg here.

There is going to be a domino effect due to "what Snowden knows" that'll spread to any number of countries.

Germany is just sore they weren't in on it! They don't like us not sharing

Personally I can't see what all the fuss is about all of a sudden? Britain has been spying for centuries and just about ALL electronic communication has been routed through, or intercepted at RAF Menwith Hill since the 60s. No one has been too bothered up to now?

Careful, the US is run by Jews, I'm pretty sure Hitler would be turning in his grave.
