When will WE learn to migrate again?

Take a look at the article and maps, nothing groundbreaking, but cool to give some perspective. Did make me wonder if resources hit the bricks, why wouldn't we migrate. Not necessarily to other countries, but within our own. I know it would be hella complicated, but if things got really bad, we should consider an approach to getting back to the basics, and migration was very instrumental in our evolution and survival. Let's talk about it. Please feel free to weigh in on ideas that would allow us to alleviate population density, feed the masses, etc. I mean seriously, we should continue talking about this and dance with what got us here.

I would migrate on a constant basis if I could. I guess you could say that I was a nomad, more or less. Unfotunately, now we have all sorts of laws forbidding hunting/fishing out of season, and people may get irritated when you plant crops on their property.

Just one word...War. A major world war would go a long ways to achieve that.

Ok, fair enough, but let us try to steer clear of WAR for now. Sure there are all kinds of laws that force civilization on us against our instincts, but let us assume we need to act in a 100 year time frame. Actually, I would like this thread to be open to brainstorming, planning, and implementing strategies. Disregard my 100 year scenario and let us start from scratch. What would need to be done to implement this transition? I would rather speak of it from a proactive approach versus a reaction to Civil War or some natural disaster. Hunting, fishing, farming, and property disputes, check. What else? How do we change the system without ripping it apart completely?

When did we stop migrating. We have a lot of snowbirds living around here that go south for the winter. If I didn't have to worry about someone breaking into the house or the snow building up on the roof or a tree crushing the house, I would be gone for the winter also. It would help to have a lot more money also

I haven't actually found a good place to go live in the winter either, there seems to be no better place than here.

As a pre-emptive approach, my sister lives in a argricultrual community in Wisconsin (Pop: 850 +/-) and her town has set aside four block square for community gardening. Anybody who contributes can take whatever they need for one meal. Spices are a different story as that is hard to parcel out in a meal by meal basis. It is monitered by volunteers (older folk) and is a great place to meet and catch up on local gossip/lore. I love visiting her!

The town is also highly defensible as it only has four avenues of approach, three of which are bridges over a river. Those can be blown if need be.

I hear Detroit wants to do basically the same thing. Return abandoned neighborhoods back to farmland. but of course, there are people complaining about that idea.

Not so long in North America, remember, some Native American tribes continued to migrate into the early 1800's in the Plains and Southwest only 200 years ago. Population density is going to choke the northern states east of the Mississippi River and they will have to re-locate somewhere. The sooner we can get back to a "hunter/gatherer" approach to alleviate overpopulating and destroying regional ecosystems, the better. I realize not everyone would be hunting and gathering, but the migratory patterns allowed the ecosystems to replenish. A change is necessary to meet our challenges head on, and a socialist handout state is not the right path.

Large Industrial cities are perfect examples of this type of need. I am encouraged you are familiar and aware of communities that actively participate in farming and sharing. Unfortunately, these types of communities are considered taboo and extremist. In order to sway public perception of this lifestyle, the original lifestyle, I fear people must first starve. High population density cities are primed for collapse both agriculturally and health/sanitation. The western and southern states past the Mississippi can handle the growth, but the East Coast cannot.

Our infrastructure would benefit from this as people traversed the states. Our nation has room for new cities, but that is not what I am going for. We cannot just re-locate. Social scientists and Ecologists need to team up on this to determine when and where migration should occur. It is not every citizens right to rape their local ecosystems to the brink of disease or pandemic. You do have the right to property. But ownership for self-preservation is contrary to societal needs. Like I said, ownership and resource capitalization are the largest barriers to this idea. I am interested in overcoming our resource greed, materialism, and fears of migrating. We must preserve the land and contribute together to harvest it. Humans are not meant to live in cubicle apartments and re-ingest their waste water over and over and over. Nor does one have the right to own massive land acreage and refuse the land for societal benefit. These landowners should be well paid, but not at competitive market prices. Sustainable resources are extremely valuable, not for capitalization and fortune building, but for progression and evolution. This idea would create tons of jobs and anyone who migrates would have employment. Social services such as doctors, police, fire, etc. would stay put, but their family members, excluding spouses, over 18 should migrate. That is just for beginners and void of social policy change ideas, laws, etc. Does anyone have any progressive thoughts to solve and further these ideas, or are we just too stubborn to hypothesize how to do it?

Sadly, if migration becomes necessary for Survival, it could spell doom for citizens of poor/developing countries due to global immigration policies discriminating them.

Either most of them will die (some will be happy about it) or will fight for their survival resulting to their demise at the hands of other people.

I'm with you man, I could easily be a leather tramp and wander the world or at least the continent if it wasn't for the responsibility of the family. It is pretty screwed up that you have to get a license to procure food in the way that we were meant to, by hunting and fishing and you can't hunt out of season even if it's for your own personal food source.

That's the way TPTB have designed the system though, it guarantees dependence on the system and keeps you from ever truly being free.

I couldn't agree with the both of you more. TPTB cannot keep the tide from changing if the conditions are set. I personally believe they see the same endgame as we do, they just are manipulating when and where to better place themselves once the world stage is reset. Chicken and the egg really as to how this all started, but at least some know how it will end and if he/she will be prepared to live free.

most would not know how or what you mean... no xbox, nor ipad, iphone app for that , nor is there a self contained microwave. or freezer box meal.

Grow food from seeds or know where and when to plant them, the few that do will be dead by then, or to set in their ways to go nomadic or tribal.

Know what the three sisters are? and i do not mean the mountain. you can grow them.

10 years ago I would have said count me in, now if you ask ill tell you where or how to do it. the best i could say is go seek a book about the ways the mountain men or fur trappers, the ones that went out on there own.

How they survived by wits and cold hard nerves, how they over came the wilderness. this will give you a hint of its not all that easy.

Darn you agriculture! Look what you have done!

I am buying one of these, just in the process of selling all my big stuff that I don't need, and getting ready to be mobile. I have all of my plants in pots, will load them in the camper and tow the house or get a truck for the plants.

You get it. But what are your thoughts, ideas, and concerns for others who miss the boat, errr the trailer? How can we farm and hunt? What property rights must be infringed or re-defined and how? Gypsies, that is what we would be.
