I completely agree and this is why i have never had a problem with ECHELON in the past. It has helped the Intelligence Communities without making too much of an impact on general civil liberties (there is an argument there but i am sure you get my meaning). Realistically, it has been operational since the 60's and few people are even aware of its presence.

However, with what is coming out now, you have to wonder about implementation, specifically post 9/11 - as that seems to have been what the Intelligence Community wanted for a whole range of sweeping new powers (by the way, that is not me saying 9/11 was an inside job!).
